Bass Mgmt tips for Apartment or condo dwellers

I live in an apartment and my #1 concern is disturbing my neighbors. Does anyone have tips on how to enjoy moderately loud subwoofer bass without disturbing neighbors? Does a carpet under a subwoofer help supress bass so it does not affect the neighbors below? etc...?

I think that you are probably out of luck. Low frequencies will travel through carpet, walls and floors no problem. Maybe some diy bass traps might help or something to isolate the sub from the floor like rubber feet. Also consider bass shakers for your chair.Graham

Several folks here have used a slab of slate as a bass for their sub. It does effectively reflect the sound waves and decouples the sub from the floor, especially in the case of downfiring subs...
But as gatemplin pointed out, at some SPL level bass is going to disturb the neighbors. The slab might buy you a couple more dB's before it does though...More later,

Only thing you can do is turn it down, and move it closer to your listening position to make up for it.
I bet if you put it right behind the back of your seat, literally right below your head, maybe even touching the couch so the vibrations transfer right into the couch/chair, you can get away with much lower volume levels but not lose out on bass.
Either that or use headphones. That's what I do for late-night viewing...
I have this couch, it's like almost entirely solid foam, seriously one day I'm gonna take a jigsaw and cut a subwoofer-sized chunk out of the bottom and install my subwoofer right under my butt- Sony 50"A3000 SXRD; Onkyo TX-SR 805
