Monitor 30 in front, 50 in rear

I'm a complete beginner at home audio and just bought a pair of monitor 30s and 50s. The problem is, I have no space to put the 50s in the front of the room because that's basically a walk way. I have a cabinet built into the wall where my tv, a/v receiver, and any other electronics go with enough room for the 30s and the cs1 center speaker.

Is it a terrible idea to have the 50s in the back of the room near the seating area while the 30s give off the main audio up front? any insight is useful, thanks.

    Welcome to CP!

It will be a little unusual, but not terrible at all. All the drivers match, so the only potential problem is that the surrounds might overpower the mains, but you should be able to make adjustments in your receiver to compensate for that difference. I think that especially if you get a sub in the front of the room that setup might work quite well for HT.

    God luck!

As he said! It's unusual, but in no way dumb or anything like that. As the surround only carry a small part of the audio stream, they do not need to be full sized speakers. That's why people prefer to have a strong front (large bookshelf or towers and a great center channel which carry 90% of the dialogue) as most sound comes from the front. You'll have to adjust the volume so your 30 are at the same level than your 50, but other than that, it should be hard at all.

Bookshelf speakers sound best when they're on a stand (which takes as much place as a pair of tower speakers), but as you have limited space, I think you made a good decision. However, I would like to know: why did you buy a pair of Tower speakers if you had no place in the front to begin with?

thanks for the information pyro. to answer your question, the 50s were on sale and figured I might as well pay a bit more for better speakers rather than get another pair of 30s and put them on some sort of stand that might look ugly in the room. In retrospect, maybe it would've been fine to just stick with 2 pairs of 30s.
