I notice that even many top of the line AVRs use a square transformer type, while even low-mid external AMPs use a round/donut type. what is the difference? advantage and disadvantage?

In short toroidals(donut shape) vs standard EI core (square)are smaller and lighter given the same wattage rating, are more efficient and emit less stray magnetic field that can induce noise into the audio circuitry.

While the toroidal has the advantages that FTGV lists above, they also fall apart quick when overloaded. Solid engineering should keep this from happening but caution with any iron is a good idea.

Frankly, it's a sales calling card at this point as much as anything for power transformers to be toroidal. Maybe it gives the ability to pack closer with less magnetic flux problems. But I don't think I'd be inclined to buy between two models just based on the form of the PT.
