RTA15t vs Monitor 5B

I recently purchased some RTA15ts and playing them side by side with my 5Bs on an old school Sansui 110wpc, it seemed like the monitors had more clarity and were punchier. Not as much bass, but better clearer highs. Is this typical of the SL3000 on this model, or maybe I have a bad tweeter. Its functioning, but maybe not up to par. I am already replacing one of them since it doesnt work. Maybe I am not giving them enough power?

I dont have prior experience with them, is this normal?

Thanks.

Welcome to Club Polk. Comparing a tower to a bookshelf is a personal preference and the room size can certainly factor in.

I have not heard the 5Bs. I do have some 15TLs and some 7Bs. I put the RDO-198 current replacement tweeters in the 15s. Both have sets have been re-done with newer caps and resistors.

I only have room to set up one pair, so I did some A/B testing over the summer. The monitor series did respond crisper for me. The 15TLs filled my room better when I raised the volume some.

I ended up putting the monitors in the closet and using the 15s, but not by much. Keep us up to date on your impressions when you get your replacement tweet.

I did a side-by-side comparison of my 5B's (SL-2000) to my RTA11TL's (w/RDO198 and upgraded XO) and decided that it really was not a fair comparison. The RTA11TL was hands-down superior. The 5B bass may have been a little punchier but did not dig nearly as deep. The 5B highs were crisp but harsh compared to the RTA11TL. Imaging was much better with the RTA11TL and, as mentioned with the RTA15TL, fill the room (large room) much better.

One day I would like to upgrade the 5B's and compare again.

I agree with Skrol. Although in a small room where the 5's shine and the 11's might be overkill it might be different. I had 5B's and 11T's stock in a largish living room. Same gear, music, listening position, etc. No contest 11T's were better. The big disadvantage for the 5B's was the room size, just couldn't pressurize it like it needed.

I think the room does have a lot to do with it. I have the 5Bs on top of the 15ts also, so they are right at ear level and I am listening to them standing directly in front. I'll test it out standing back a bit. Need my new tweeter too.
