Trouble replacing my SL 1000, Peerless substitute?

So I recently acquired a pair of what I believe are 10B's, and they came with a pair of stock SL 1000s. One is shot however, and I need to replace it. It has been pretty tough finding a replacement however, and I was wondering if I could get away with putting a much easier to acquire Peerless in instead, or even a SL 2000. Is this a terrible idea? I'm not an audiophile, but I do have ears, so am I going to drive myself nuts with mismatched tweeters? What exact model of Peerless would I want if I was to go that direction?
Thanks for putting up with a newbie.

The SL1000 is Polk's take on the peerless. It would be your closest bet to the SL1000 and actually sound better than the SL1000.

Just changing one of them isn't a good idea though. It is always better to replace both if your changing to different tweeters. This way you will have a timbre match and the speakers will meld together better.

Another route would be the Polk replacement for the SL1000, which is the RD-0194. You can get them through Polk and I believe shipping is free or there is a discount if you mention your a member of the site. The RD-0194 is a much better tweeter than both the SL1000 and the peerless.

I looked into the RD-0194s and the only issue I have is cost. While I can probably drop 30-40 bucks on a new tweeter, I'm in college and living on ramen, so I would really rather not spend $120 all in one go. It's a shame, too, because the sound is (even with one tweeter!) just so amazingly better than the terrible computer speakers that seem to blare from every dorm room. Time to start saving I guess.

Watch for a pair of sl2000s on eBay. They usually go for $25-30 each + shipping. You will need to replace both tweeters for the speakers to sound right.

IIRC, the Club Polk price is $40 per with free shipping. Do NOT waste your money buying SL2000's.

I study international relations in Portland. I got the speakers at a garage sale for $10 because the fuses were blown, and ended up with the nicest pair of speakers I'll be able to afford for a long time. The $40 per sounds very attractive though, maybe I should just start selling plasma or something. Do I just need to call Polk for that deal?

John? You mean you don't know? Constitutional Law, of course!

    Welcome to Club Polk!

How well I remember those students days and the "lack" of any money for anything "audio"! I sympathize more than you can imagine as I listened to my AIWA boombox and a cheap set of white plastic headphones. 97.9 FM in NYC--I think they're still on!

We didn't have Ramen back then. So we ate a lot of tuna out of the can and canned peas and whole wheat bread. There's a diet for you. You've got some nice speakers there. Enjoy them and good luck with your studies.

We have to pull John's leg once in a while or he'll "free" us all. lol

I.A. in Portland Oregon, I would assume. Portland State?

You were alright in my book until you came up with that "shadow-state" bs.:cheesygrin:

On another note... Jesse's right about what to do. Call Polk CS and tell them you are family here at CP. Myself and a couple others here can identify with your plight, and respect the fact that you are able to tell the difference between great sound from real speakers and the crap that comes from a computer.

I am in with an Andrew Jackson to help you on your way to the new tweets, and I believe CNH is in as well. Get to ten posts and shoot me a PM with your paypal address.

Wow, talk about community! I'm going to have to pay this forward somehow. Seriously, I think I was just cemented as a Polk fan. I'll drift around a bit, maybe post a couple other questions, and then pm you guys. At the very least, I can take some pictures of the faces my friends make when they hear the difference between the laptop speakers they bump and my beastly 10B's.

What is the correct cost for RDO-194s for Polk Club members? I bought a pair about a year ago and was charged $48 each + tax with free shipping. She said I was getting the discount. Did I get the discount or did she lie?

Thanks. I thought you might have been joking but when I read an earlier post where you thought $40 was the cost it got me to wondering. I couldn't imagine the lady at Polk misleading me.

I'm going to go ahead and say that $48 is a pretty good price anyways. Plus, I'll still have a perfectly good SL 1000 to sell off once I get the replacement tweets. I can just throw that up in the For Sale area right? How much should I ask for?
