I just completed installing a new 5.1 system.
Denon AVR 1312
Polk Monitor 30's on the front
PSW10 SW
Polk RM6751's rear satellites
Samsung Blu-ray / CD player
Polk RM8 center speaker
I'm very satisfied with my equipment when watching Blu-ray movies. I have the controls tweaked to where it sounds decent enough. Even Pandora Radio with various types of music sounds fairly decent. However, when playing a music CD on the Samsung it does not sound quite right. Some CD's will only play through the two front speakers and they sound fine. Strangely some CD's play through all 5.1 speakers and the music quality is lost. (especially acoustical guitar stuff)
I have a cheap car amplifier (real cheap!) on my iMac with inexpensive Sony bookshelf speakers and all my itunes sound excellent -- far better than the above system. Great separation and a goodsound stage.
Question: Can you have a decent entry level 5.1 system and still obtain decent Hi-fi stereo too? Thanks!

I would check the settings on the Denon, it should have something called "Direct" or "Pure Direct" which will allow the unadulterated stereo signal to go to your two front speakers (and subwoofer depending on how you setup your bass management).2 Channel - Polk SDA-2BTL, Carver TFM-35, Peachtree iDAC, Qobuz streamed via Episode Lynk using bubble UPnP server

It wasn't in my Basic written manual. I had to go online and get the Advanced (paperless) Manual.
You push the Audio Adjust Button on the remote and your choices are:
"Multi Channel Stereo Playback" (all speakers)
"Virtual Playback" (???)
"Stereo Playback" (all multichannel signals are input and mixed down to 2-channel audio) Sounds
good here! Plays through Front left and Front right and SW only.
"Direct Playback" (no tone adjustment and sounds like Stereo above)
So, I figured out with your tip. I be expert now! -
