Any advice on decent quality racks for under $500? Maybe something with doors. My boys are starting to get old enough to get into things. They actually listen pretty well, but don't want to chance it. Google led me to some nice racks, but usually no doors or protection.

I know there's tons of stuff out there but figured you all would have some first hand experience.

Thanks for any advice.

Salamander makes some pretty nice racks.

If you are handy with power tools, design and make your own. That way you get exactly what you want and need. The recommendations above are all solid advice.
If you can't hear a difference, don't waste your money.

I searched google for "nice rack" and have to agree with their results, (although maybe not best for your 2 youngsters) . . .

Salamander is probably the best money can buy with doors, but may come in a bit over budget.

You also need to consider heat dissipation when you go with enclosed models.

Here is what I ended up going with. It is from a website that sells overstocked goods:wink:

    010.JPG

Got the TV stand and the audio rack for about $650. Couldn't quite go where some of you recommended due to budget, but it seems to be real, heavy-duty furniture. The TV stand weighs about 160 lbs and the audio rack about 90 lbs.

Need to finish the drawers on the TV stand.

I didn't put the back on either of them because the receiver is in one and the amp in the other. I thought about putting the backs on and getting small cooling fans but we'll see...

Hope you like it...but either way...let me know.

    Thanks,
    Paul

Looks good. Can you place the TV in the middle of the main speakers? It may "sound" more natural.

Yes, I can slide the TV to the far left of the stand and it would be pretty close to the middle. However, 90% of the speakers' use is the turntable or the squeezebox. Sometimes, I'll use it with the TV if there is music on PBS or something, but otherwise we use the basement for movies and what not.

Here's what I use. You can even get one with a locking fold-down metal door making it totally kid-proof.
