Ok looking at some of the post here on this board I noticed that the Monitor 5 series speakers are completely different in design.
Does anybody remember why Polk overlapped the midwoffer to the PR?

Early 5B's, I believe. The 5A's had the Peerless tweeter. The later versions of the 5B's used the SL2000.

So how would I make sure that the tweeter was not replaced with an Sl1000?
Would I be able to ck the crossover?

That is interesting. I thought that only the 5A had the overlap PR and MW and the badge mounted to the bottom of the cabinet and either the SL-1000 or Peerless. Any idea what the mfg date was?

It looks like a sl1000 to me. The peerless has a black dome and face plate. The sl1000 is silver with a clear dome like the one you have. If you want to verify, remove the four screws holding the tweeter in, remove it and read the sticker on the back.

See the sticker that says "5B"? Guess what, it's a 5B. Lots of variations of 5B's. My pair of 5B's had the sl2000 tweeter with a single fuse (now completely bypassed) but my cabinets are the newer cabs with the beveled edges. If I had to guess yours are a bit of a transitional model since they have the older cabinets and overlapping mid and passive you typically see for the 5A's. If you care to pull the midwoofer I'd be interested to know the model number MW6500, 6501 or 6502.

    The tweeter is an SL1000.

Now getting back to the OP, what was the reason for Polk to overlap the MW to the PR?
    Anybody know?

If the MW6500 is genuine and not a replacement, everything on the surface points to it being a 5A, but Polk had so many transitional pieces that it is likely they ran out of 5A x-overs and used 5B x-overs to finish the run, so to speak. I wouldn't worry too much as the biggest differences in sound were the tweeters.
