Hello here - first post

I happened upon a pair of SDA SRS 1.2TL's for a very decent price here in Ontario, Canada and the one problem I face is the lack of Drivers avalible for this Vintage stuff! My puppy's were missing the outside Left Driver - which is a WM6511 from what I gather. They do need a lot of work big time, and were truly neglected but I picked them up for a decent price - if not a steal. So I am willing to go the long road on this project which may require a complete overhaul of all drivers and bits. They were pretty rough when I got them, but I do have faith that they will sing again.......

I have heard that Polk still makes replacement Drivers for these monsters that are close to original - so my question to the forum..... should I completly rebuild these units? or is it more feasible to just replace one or two original Drivers??

Thanks,

Tom

    Welcome to Club Polk!

I'd say replace the drivers that don't work and leave the ones that do alone. Those crossovers will need attention and their are tons of threads that can guide you to getting those big boys to sound better than ever. Good luck!

Thanks audiocr381ve - They are in very rough shape and I look for guidance from the pro's here on site. I have not really had a close look at the crossover system - it may have been very abused over the years, so any advice is worth it's weight in gold. I plan on stripping the entire cabinet and getting that back to 100% original, and then work my way through the Drivers. Is there an easy way of checking each individual Driver for operational value?

    Cheers,

    Tom

    Forgt to add,

I will post some pictures of these units, as a picture speaks a 1000 words and may add some insight about what I am up against with these fine units. May take a couple days but will make it happen.

I'm sitting here listening to Paul Simon's Graceland on mine now and enjoying every moment of it. Had it not been for this forum I would not have even known they existed. I picked mine up completely re-done and worth every cent. Do the dead now and enjoy forever.

Thanks for the inspiration Toolfan66 and michael1947!!

I have heard so much about these awesome speakers - I can't wait to hear them purrrrrr!! - I have a Pioneer VSX-DS1 about 95% dismantled in my basement to get a Relay retrofit and cleaning - although that will not be the primary source of power for these thirsty beasts. I will need to go on an Amplifier excursion to properly feed these monsters!

Before you go and replace drivers do you have the sda cable hooked up by chance?

You say your outside drivers are "missing"? If they're completely out of the cabinet I would only put enough power to them to verify that the other drivers function. The box needs to be sealed up tightly and possibly could damage the rest of the drivers playing freely.

Congrats on a wonderful pair of speakers. I luv my 1.2tl's.

Congrats on your purchase and welcome to the Forum! Search for posts on modding these by Darqueknight and TF66, who responded above. Their work is first rate and well documented with pics and written explanations.

If you've never heard an upgraded pair (rebuilt Xovers, large inductors replaced, tweeters upgraded, upgraded SDA IC cable, rings or Hurricane nuts for all drivers, Blackhole 5, etc., Dreadnought AI-1 interface) you have no idea how spectacular these can be. Don't know what you paid for these, but be prepared to drop some coin for big rewards!

And yes, they love lots of high current, clean power.

I too am in Ontario, and love my 1.2 tl's! Replace the tweeters, and do the usual mods and you will be very happy! They need a "big" room to shine, at least three feet on each side. Have fun!

Test all the drivers out of the cabinet. You may have other issues that aren't the drivers.

Also did you get the SDA cable with them? It's the cable that runs between the two cabinets as in interconnect to create the SDA effect.

    Congrat's Tom

I found a pair of SRS 1.2TL's in Arizona 2 years ago and hauled them back to British Columbia. They are in mint condition, i have the parts to rebuild the crossovers. The tweeters are all replaced.

Congrats on the TL's and welcome to the club.

I picked some of these up for my father a couple of years ago and we have done just about every mod we can to them. Let me tell you, like others have said, its worth it and you will not be disappointing. As mentioned above, make sure you have room and some clean, high current power and they will sing.

    Lets see pics!

I would hook the cable power them up and give them a try that cable supply's part of your signal and you should have it hooked up. Try it out and report back.
