Can't decide on a new tablet.

Hey guys,

I'm in the market for a new tablet and I'm stuck between two:

- Ipad 2

- Sony Tablet S

Both in 32gb versions, no 3G

The price on the Tablet S is nice, $480 vs $600 and almost every review has the two tablets at a near tie...

Making the Tabelt S a much better value. I like the ability to add memory to the Tablet S plus it uses the Android platform that I'm very familiar with.

However the Ipad has a slightly larger screen, seems to be better built and a much better battery life.

I have played around with both and I can't for the life of me make up my mind...

I'm also debating just stopping the search and waiting for Apple to come out with the Ipad 3 (supposed to be announced first week of March). But reports on the Ipad 3 show it will not be that much better than the Ipad 2.

Anyone here have either one and can give some extended use reviews?

My school's auction committee let us know that the big ticket item for the next two years from paddle bidding is to be tablets. I'm testing both an iPad 2 and Motorola Xoom since I teach technology. So far the iPad holds a definite edge in interface, ease of use, and app lockdown capability. Xoom wins in its ability to work with Google Docs.

I go with apple refurbs, new case and battery plus savings and same warranty as new. How about an iPad 2 32g for $499.

Rumors say first week in March for iPad 3 or at least the announcement. Might be worth waiting for, even if you still go iPad 2 you should get it for cheaper once iPad 3 is out. Only a few weeks away.

If you're wanting to go the Android route there are plenty of better options than the Sony tablet. I like my iPad 2 but if I were buying new today I'd be considering the Asus Transformer Prime as well.

They arent really similar at all. Apple is great if you are happy with what you get and have no desire to change. If you want nearly unlimited customization then any android tablet is the way to go.

Stock for stock apple wins in easy of use, but with about 1hr of work on any android tab you can unlock a beast of a tablet. Its all in what your plans are for it

I've been checking that one out and it looks interesting. However, like all the other android based units, it's held back by the limited apps available...

I think I'm just going to do the smart thing and wait for Apple to announce the Ipad 3...

I was goofing around on my wifes Iphone 4 tonight just trying to get a better feel for IOS 5 and I'm liking it more and more.

I don't know how long you want to wait, but Win8 should be coming out this fall. I'd imagine prices for a lot of the older tablets will drop a lot then if you don't want Win8.

Waiting for the Ipad 3 to come out is going to be hard enough, I don't have the will power to wait till the fall...

I cant wait for Ipad 3 to come out so I get a smoking deal on refurb Ipad 2.

I paid $249 for my Ipad 1 16g wifi when the Ipad 2 came out.

I've had my iPad2 since last May and absolutely love it (32gb, wifi only). We hardly ever turn on the PC laptop anymore.

Here are a few of my favorite features:

    - Very light. The iPad2 is very thin and light, yet when handled it just feels solid.

    - User interface. Enough said, the iOS is great.

    - Battery life is very good. We probably charge it once every 7-10 days. We don't watch movies or such all that often but do use it daily.

    - Screen resolution. Movies and tv shows look great.

    - WiFi is seemless and stable.

    - We have a Smart Cover. Genius invention. If you get an iPad, look in to a Smart Cover.

    - Lack of Flash support has not really been an issue.

    - Apps, apps ,apps.

I can't speak for the Sony, but my friend has a Motorola Xoom. I've used it and don't like it so much. First, it is HEAVY. Also, the Andoid OS is just not as intuitive or pleasing as the iOS.

    Good luck with your choice.

I agree with all the above except the screen resolution. The screen itself is beautiful, but the actual resolution is lower that almost every other Android tablet out there over 9 inches.

this is what i'm trying to decide on.. i'm looking at either getting a cheap ipad 2 refurb or a brand new ipad 3.. just not sure which yet.. mostly was hoping to see if the ipad3 was going to be quadcore, but its looking more and more like its just going to be a faster dual core. retina display would be nice though...

I would go with an HP Touchpad...in fact, I just did!

At around $250 for the 16GB version, you get great hardware, an amazing OS (webOS is far from dead, FYI), and the ability to put Android onto it in the future if you so desired.

    That's just my preference.

Wait for the iPad 3! I have an iPad 2 and will be upgrading when it's released. I read that Apple has been working with the movie studios to get all their movie content on iTunes upgraded to 1080p in preparation for the iPad 3. The amount of content available for the iPad is far beyond any other tablet device.
    No excuses!
