Do towers close to a plasma TV need to be shielded?

I was set on the TSi400, but then realized they're probably not shielded and I'll be putting them up against my plasma TV (due to space constraints). Polk makes it a point to offer shielded center speakers. I'm now thinking of going with the Yamaha NS-555 since they are shielded (and as a bonus, go down to 30Hz and have two 6.5" and one 5" driver, instead of 44Hz with three 5.25" (more size diversity seems good)).

Thoughts?

I believe all of Polks speakers are shielded, something that has become an industry standard years ago from major brands. Exceptions exist of coarse, but Polk speakers should have no problem.

    Pioneer elite vhx 21
    Sony 4k BRP

Plasma TVs are not affected by a non-shielded speaker.

Interestingly, the TSi manual only specifically mentions that the center speakers are shielded. However, this was only an issue with CRT TVs.

And, if it was a real problem, we'd probably have seen many posts about it on here by now...

    Wow fast replies.

Check out the last 2 pages of: http://www.polkaudio.com/downloads/catalogs/2008/TSi_Series.pdf It has a "Magnetic Shielding" row for center speakers, powered subs, and surrounds, and they're listed "yes, no, no" respectively. The row isn't there for the floorstanding or bookshelf

The LSi, VM, and RTi series brochures all make it a point to say that the towers are shielded. So it appears that the TSi isn't shielded.

I'm glad to hear you say plasmas aren't affected. However, EMR, depending how strong it is, can affect all electronics, causing current to flow from changing magnetic waves. 100W through 8ohms means 3.5A, comparable to a vacuum cleaner, and that's probably sizable EMR. As to whether it would affect a plasma or any other electronics next to it isn't obvious to me.

No problem with LCD/Plasma TV, as long as they're not close (few inches). Sure, it won't do any visible damage in the short run if they're close, but it might not help their long term durability. But if and how it will affect them is unknown to me. I mean, your high current wires may already be doing some kind of EMI to nearby electronics...

The boys pretty much have this. Shielding is only necessary if you have electron guns firing to phosphors on the TV screen which you do not have in a plasma (that's not how the picture is formed). The magnetic fields affect the direction of the beams distorting the field, exciting phosphors, causing localized discoloration, and so forth.

    You're good!

:mrgreen:Hi all, I have my RTA-15tl's about 10 inches from side of crt t.v., and perhaps 3-4 inches in front, so far, no problem, and they are not shielded.....As for this affecting long-term t.v. problems, I don't know, but don't care much either, as the t.v. is old, and it don't matter to me......Just my two cents
