Does the MC80 need a back box for in-ceiling mount?

I have 2 MC80 speakers to be mounted in-ceiling for surround speakers. The ceiling is drywall. I was told that they should have a back box. I have also read that they do not need it. What is the right answer? Also, if they do need a back box, is there a less expensive back box than the Russound Flexbox or the DynaBox?
