All you need is Google, why waste your time with those pesky components?

Imagine, Google buys DefTech or Polk or some similar company . . . suddenly we will all have Lsi Googles and Google Mythos speakers. It wouldn't be the first time Google bought a company to enter a market competitively.

Good ol' Google. As heard on a recent episode of the NPR quiz show Wait, Wait... Don't Tell Me:
SAGAL: Yes, indeed. Now you may remember - Google, yes.

    (SOUNDBITE OF APPLAUSE)

SAGAL: You may remember that when Google started, their motto was Don't Be Evil. Well, now they've revised it to...

    KASELL: Bwa-ha-ha-ha-ha.

    (SOUNDBITE OF LAUGHTER)

    (SOUNDBITE OF APPLAUSE)

I really like google music. You get to store 20k songs (and they can all be FLAC) and it will stream them from anywhere. Google will probably collaborate with someone who builds capable hardware and they will build the software and guide design and development. This has been the case with anything they have done hardware related. Google is the epitome of horizontal integration.

Full disclosure: I love google products, and their vision for the ultimate integrated experience. Being forced to be all Apple through work (phone, laptop, desktop, tablet), just highlights all the flaws in the (apple's) system. The two companies promote simplicity but in two different ways: google bends to your lifestyle, apple bends you to theirs.

Are they going to stream music throughout your house by using those 'green' Dalek like robots in the pic to move through it and broadcast music to whatever room they're in while they are "collecting" customer information (looking at what furniture, draperies, paintings, rugs, appliances, etc.are in your house and downloading that to a data base--part of which will be rented by the illustrious M. Zuckerberg who will "poke" your HOME for BIG PROFITS!).

We're living in "satire" of "global" proportions, boys! Profits = people being more and more connected and People are nothing more than a means of fueling a Profit Engine. Human communication has "no" meaning outside of this, right? Let the IPOs commence!!

Google's "do no evil" moniker is a good one, and one that holds water, especially when compared to most other corporate strategies.

My company does a lot of search engine work for clients so I've personally studied Google's propensity to collect and mine data over the past several years.

I don't know how many of you caught this, but the linked article states a google app loaded on a phone or tablet will be the system control interface. That's a real red flag.

Google will be storing every move a user makes somewhere in their vast array of databases.

Yep, and at some point DNA evidence and GPS tracking will become obsolete, and law enforcement will just go to Google, to access their worldwide "virtual bloodhound" sensor network. This will be shortly after it is discovered that the TV show "Person of Interest" was actually modeled after Google's current capabilities ;)

That is what law enforcement did in China with Google. Google named names. People are in prison, so much for "do no evil".

FWIW I understand Google is also working on storing and controlling everyone's medical records.

I mispoke before. I meant "motto" and not "moniker." At any rate, te don't be evil thing is part of their corporate strategy. It is not indicative of moral rule nor is it saying that they will only do what is best for the people of the world. My point is simply that their stance on corporate domination flies in the face of more classical corporate approaches.

Not recalling this...what exactly did Cisco do, and how long ago? Maybe I'll remember after you describe it.

PS Google gets all the press, but they're far from the only ones neck deep in the information mining and manufacturing business. Their "do no evil" mantra makes them easy targets. The sad thing is how much info people freely give up via facebook and the like, not knowing how many links these seemingly insignificant bits of information morph into when they're entered into these profiling databases that stitch everything together.

They tried to get into consumer electronics around 2009, in part with a wireless whole house audio system.

I think Google is a much different company than Cisco. And I really don't think they will get into the manufacturing game anytime soon. They will likely provide the OS/software and rely on an established company to handle the rest.

You do know G.G., that the toaster does have to warm up to get good sound. Plus replacing the heating element with a higher wattage one will improve the sound. They even have 4 channel toasters too for your listening pleasure.

It's an information technology world gents. Info about everything and anyone is being collected, sold. How that info is used though seems fuzzy at best. Could be used against you, or for you. My guess is mostly to be used against you.

Between google, apple, camera's, drones, you won't be able to take a piss without someone knowing little willy is really....little.

It's a good point, but even with the bad press, the man/woman and child in the street still clamors to use Google because their apps are hard to best. With Cisco, the buying decision was made more at the IT professional level and they never quite enjoyed that pull from the consumer.

The Google executives are being dragged before congress next week to explain their current unethical activity. We didn't hear anything from them until they got caught violating the privacy of their users by a college student doing a research paper of all things. Now they are playing the all too common "ignorance" plea.

I like the statement I saw earlier about Google.

"We users are not their customers. We are their product." to be sold to the highest bidders.

You should see what Google was just found out to be tracking . . .

Check out the "analytics" used by Target stores (glad I never shop there), discussed in this article:

    "How Companies Learn Your Secrets"
    http://www.nytimes.com/2012/02/19/magazine/shopping-habits.html

    a quote:
"For decades, Target has collected vast amounts of data on every person who regularly walks into one of its stores. Whenever possible, Target assigns each shopper a unique code — known internally as the Guest ID number...Also linked to your Guest ID is demographic information like your age, whether you are married and have kids, which part of town you live in, how long it takes you to drive to the store, your estimated salary, whether you’ve moved recently, what credit cards you carry in your wallet and what Web sites you visit. Target can buy data about your ethnicity, job history, the magazines you read, if you’ve ever declared bankruptcy or got divorced, the year you bought (or lost) your house, where you went to college, what kinds of topics you talk about online, whether you prefer certain brands of coffee, paper towels, cereal or applesauce, your political leanings, reading habits, charitable giving and the number of cars you own."
