Vintage Sony CD Player

Hi,

I've got a Sony CDP-75es CD player that is just sitting around collecting dust. My wife bought me this player 13 years ago and at the time, it was Sony's top-of-the-line CD player. I am considering hooking it back up into my system, but it has a slight problem. It seems to skip very easily, even if I just tap on the top of the player, the disk that's playing will skip. My question is, is it worth getting it fixed? If the electronics are far to out-dated, I guess it wouldn't be worth it, correct? The player has some great features and served me well (before it started skipping). I hate to just junk it. Any feedback regarding this topic, would be greatly appreciated.

You could get an isolation platform and isolation plate to eliminate the skipping. Older players are known for being sensitive to vibrations. Here are the ones I use on my player:

Heavy, vibration absorbing plate for the top.

I had serious vibrations being transferred to my SACD, due to a cheap entertainment center. These two pieces fixed that right up. I feel as though it tightened up my sound, but the SACD sounds so good, I cannot be sure. I FEEL better tho'.

Or just sell it, you have a nice NAD model that can handle things like a champ. Do you have any pictures of the Sony?

Thanks for the reply. You are right about the NAD, but some of the NAD functions can only be accessed via the on-screen display. It has 3 different random modes, but only one works via the player itself. To get it to shuffle, you have to use the OSD. My wife hates that and the Sony worked much better in that regard. Sorry, I don't have any pictures of the Sony, although I could get one if you really need it. If I did decide to sell it, how much do you think I could get for it?

That is odd about the NAD...hmmmm. I think the Sony is a great player, maybe pick up those isolation plates, and keep it.

Resell...I have no idea. Audiogon doesn't show your particular model, take a look and find something close to yours maybe, and adjust?? www.audiogon.com

The sensitivity to tapping your old Sony exhibits is not likely to be improved by service, it's a function of the transport isolation and some are simply more sensitive.

Before I bought any isolation devices I'd set it up and see if it's an issue in actual play. If it is there are less expensive isolation alternatives than those mentioned above.

As for resale value, do an ebay advanced search of closed auctions for your model as a reference.

I don't have that problem, but I've heard from very respectable heads, that a couple of tennis balls sawed in half and placed underneath something as light as a cd player works well.

Well, certainly look at your options for isolation, those were just suggestions.

In 1983, I bought the first Sony compact disc player to hit the market--it was a 14 bit DAC. The damn thing cost me about $750 bucks if I remember correctly. We've come a long way.
