My BOSE 301 AV Monitor sound like crap, why?

I mean, there is 2 super big 2 inches tweeters and a big 8 inches woofer, it's supposed to be good...

I'm still waiting for my LSi7 to be shipped, so... as I have no speakers left, and I needed some music, I plugged my mother's old speakers (I sold her my RTi4, and she's happy with them, at least for now. )... Those big ugly boxes are nothing compared to my old RTi4... were they considered good 23 years ago?
Speakers: Polk Audio LSiM 705, LSiM 703, LSiM 704c
Receiver: Denon X3500H

    Are you being serious?

You will find a couple of guys on hear that like certain Bose speakers but 301's are the worst. They were never good to my ears.

Those 2" tweeters are cone style and not built well to boot.

That being said i have liked a couple Bose products the 701 in particular.

While there is "nothing" necessarily wrong with the design of a paper tweeter (many "vintage" speakers have cone tweeters). The construction and materials of the 30X are not up to par. I remember auditioning them against my db Plus 440s, which were half the price new, over twenty years ago and being "surprised" that the cheaper 6" two way mirrored pair kicked their A$$$$.

Also, speaker that old might need new crossovers? As I remember the 300 series. They had a modicum of bass (a little flabby and exaggerated, and seemed to smear some of the higher frequency range) and could play loudly. This "full" sound and Bose advertising pretty much "sold" these to many costumers.

If you think they sound bad now. Wait till those LSI-7s come!

Nah I wasn't serious. One side has it's "tweeters" blown, so sound is crappier than it was. And I use them like if they were bookshelf (not enough room for them... too heavy for my stands, etc.), so they aren't in their optimal position.

Anyways, I knew it was crap... and I miss my RTi now (I probably won't in a week or two), but I needed that money to buy my LSi7. This BOSE crap sounds like a 100$ boombox at best. Properly positioned, and with every driver functioning, it must be good for background music... but never for critical listening.

I'll give them back to my mom when I'll get my LSi7... she's use it with in her basement/gym 25 years old entry level Pioneer. :P
