I am building some shelfs for my blurays this weekend and would like them to match my tv and entertainment center. What is the best method to achieve a "Piano gloss like" finish? The wood I got is 3/4 X 8 select pine it was $16 a plank. It seems like high quality wood.
ps would like to either do black or a dark walnut

seem to be some good instructions here:

There is a ton of info out there on the subject.

I would think pine would not be the best wood to use to achieve that finish though.--Gary--

If you want them to be completely smooth and not wood-grained, I would cover them in a skim coat of auto body putty, sand them smooth and repeat the process, then take them to a body shop and ask if they would shoot them with basecoat/clearcoat black. If they are painting a black car ath the same time, the cost should be minimal. This will give you a durable finish that would be as close to a piano black finish you can get.
You can do that same with cans, but the durability will not be the same. The Gear... Or something like that... -
No offense, but pine is the about the worst wood to use.
I agree... pine is too soft... you really need a harder wood.... otherwise it will dent easily... -
I'd go with veneer.
