I know I have not been that active on the forum lately but my job has taken up a lot of my time and they are trying to dump a lot more work on me and not offer any compinsation. After no raises for the last 3 years I decided its time for a change. I have really fallen in love with photography and a friend of mine who works at a studio gave me a recomendation and I have an interview for them tomorrow. I know its a big career change but I think now is the time to do it as I am not happy with the IT field anymore. So hopefully tomorrow afternoon I will have some good news and start a new and fun career.

I had a similar situation about a year ago and have been slowly transitioning into a career in the film/video industry. I wish you the best! Do you have a link to any of your work?

As a IT professional myself I understand entirely. Best of luck in your new endeavor! And pray for those who remain behind

P.S. surprisingly enough I too enjoy video/graphic editing (its what my actual major was in lol).

Must be an IT thing..... start in IT then go into graphic arts

I hope it works out for you.

As you are probably aware, it has become very difficult for pros to make a living "just" as a photographer. Lots of reasons for the difficulty...but it is hard. I know a few who do it, but they work their asses off just to make it. The ones that are really successful have found a niche that separates them from everyone else with a DSLR and a web site who calls themselves a professional. I asked a friend who is a very good wedding photographer when the last time he used his camera to take photos "just for fun". He couldn't remember. He still likes the art and craft of his profession and takes pride in his work...but it ain?t just for fun anymore.

Most of the really renowned photographers NOW make the majority of their incomes from things other than taking photos...like seminars, photo tours, teaching positions, writing, etc. They made their reputations over a period of many years and now it is really big business teaching others how to be good photographers.

I am not trying to put a damper on your effort...there are times I think it would be cool to be a pro photographer. I am part of a photography group that meets for lunch two times each month and most of the group are pros. I know how hard it is for them. So little of their time is actually spent with a camera in their hand. It is marketing, managing, processing, editing, selling, customer service, scheduling, etc, etc. that takes up 90% of their time with the other 10% shooting. I don't think many of them would change what they do, because they really do love it and are willing to put in the time and effort.

Hell, you are young enough, single, no kids. Give it a shot. You never know, you may become the next Irving Penn.

"A good photograph is one that communicates a fact, touches the heart, and leaves the viewer a changed person for having seen it; it is in one word, effective." - Irving Penn
"Just because you’re offended doesn’t mean you’re right." - Ricky Gervais

"For those who believe, no proof is necessary. For those who don't believe, no proof is possible." - Stuart Chase

Shack I appreciate all the advice and have spoken to quite a few pro's and they have told me the same thing as you. I fully understand the work that I am going to have to do. If I get this job I will be starting out doing school photography (yearbooks, high school sports) so I will have steady income from that and then plan on doing freelance on the side. I have already booked a wedding and might have engagement photo session soon as well. I belong to 5 different photography clubs in the area and usually am out with them every weekend. It will be a long road but I think its one I need to take and I am not afraid of working my **** off to get what I want.

I have to agree with Shack as I have a very good friend in the film and video business (Independent) who is always scrambling for work. But it does sound like you have some stable and regular jobs above. So, why not!

I've always said that if you don't like what you do it's pretty much "hell on earth". Work shouldn't be onerous it should be meaningful and fulfilling. Unfortunately the way our society is set up, such "jobs" are few and far between and the put the burden of finding one or creating one on the "individual". For those individuals who have the wherewithal to realize this, great. But for the majority of wage laborers who'll never realize their dreams...well, there must be "better" ways of organizing work and labor than what we "now" have and have had forever!

Go for it Dave! Sounds like it's the best thing for you!

    Good Luck!

    I'm rootin for ya.

    Good luck tomorrow morn.

I know what it's like to work and work and all that happens is you are known for being the producer sooooooo guess who gets the work that others don't seem to be able to do..... we do. If we were compensated for it, fine. But that was not my cases either. They got two people to do one job I had and they still couldn't do what I did. Another damaged sooo much material it was a joke on another. I know where you're at and I hope you get to show the Co. where you are now what it's like to not have you for a while or ever again.

Praying and hoping like mad you get your change for new employment tomorrow!

    Good Luck!

Well I just got back from the interview and I feel good about it. I sat down with 3 generations of the family that runs the company. I felt really comfortable with them and should hear back tomorrow or Monday. Being that I know someone that works there and got the recomendation I think that will also be a big help. I will keep everyone informed.
