System Control Via WiFi?

This may be a dumb question but if anyone knows it would be fellow Club Polk members. We got our office set up with wi fi & Ill be doing my home soon. I have a Palm Tungsten C with wi fi that is awsome. I would like to know if there is a way to control my system vol, cd changer, etc with wi fi? I know that you can do it with cables & touch panels in every room to control the system but is there a way to get around all the wires? Id love to beable to adjust the vol via my handheld or play the next cd without being infront of the system. I want to add speakers to the back lani area (zone 2) & beable to adj the vol & skip or replay a cd without going into the house & without running all the wires. My receiver has a 232 port & Id guess thats what would be used. I made a 50' cable to use with my laptop to control my receiver using the rotel control software. Works very well but again Id like to get around all the cables. It would be real nice to turn the system on when I get home from anyware in the house, & let all the components warm up. I may be lazy but sometimes while working at the main counter the phone rings I need to run into the LV rm & turn the cd vol down before answering the phone, or make sure I hook up the 50' cable prior to sitting down to work.

    Is the C the one with 801.11b or bluetooth?

    Do you want the C to act as a universal remote or do you want
    to control the Rotel software from your Palm?

    I know of someone has used the remote desktop functionality of his PocketPC to remote log in to the Db servers from home and monitor performance. You could probably find the same sort of functionality to do that with your laptop/50' cable. Mind you, he had to do a lot of scrolling on his pocketPC...

    You'd probably either need a WAP or at the very least a wi-fi card for your laptop. Of course, 11b stuff seems to be on clearance since the new 11g stuff came out.

    I don't think there's a dongle that connects to your stereo components and lets you control them wireless (yet).

    If you're into the programming and tweaking of stuff, you could probably write a Palm control app to talk to a microcontroller to talk to the 232 port. Of course you'd have to get the protocol for the rotel and as for writing a Palm app :confused:

    Actually, it could be fun but you might find it faster to just run the wires at that point. :D

    My Tungsten C has wifi. Id like to use it as a master controler. I have the Pronto software on my Treo handheld which works ok. but if I could control the system through wi fi using a program like a pronto it would be wonderfull! I dont think anything is currently avail but Ill keep searching!

    It would be pretty neat. Sounds like you'll need a pc/microcontroller with wifi to hang off your rig though. At that point it may be cheaper to do the rf controller. Those are a lot of choices there.

    Of course, sometimes we do things for the neato factor and damn the economics. ;)
