I just bought the PSW650- does anyone else have one? How do you run yours? Through the LFE or the unfiltered jacks?
I understand that you can't use the varible cross over with the LFE, but is that necesasry if I have rt16 towers in the front and rt7 bookshelves in the rear? I want to minimize distortion.
Reciever (Yamaha rxv2090)- if that matters!
Anyone?

At the Yammy:
1) Set all speakers to small
2) Set the crossover to 80 Hz
3) Set the sub to yes/on
4) Run a cable from the sub out jack
At the 650:
1) Plug the cable into the LFE jack
2) Adjust sub volume to taste or calibrate system with SPL meter"What we do in life echoes in eternity"

Your not the first person to recommend swithing all speakers to the small mode. WHy is that? My fronts are large.
-
MUCH lighter load on the AVR amps - it will run cooler and have much more headroom and volume capability.
Less potential for negative interaction of several low bass sources in the room.
Allows placement of the mains for SQ, not bass response.
Allows optimum placement of the sub as the single source of low bass in the room.
Most so-called "full range" speakers are really not. They perform much better when relieved of deep bass duty, and exhibit much lower THD and IMD.

Doc,
You really seem to know your way around this stuff. Given my system, do you recommend setting my speakers to small as well.Everytime I think I'm out, THEY PULL ME BACK IN!!!!!!

Point well taken, makes since. I will test out the theory. Thanks again!

Doc- by the way, I have a cs350ls (centr), and of course 16's in the front...I was thinking about swithing out my rt-7's in the rear and replacing them with the LSiFx. Will they match? What is your take?
I welcome anyone's advice! -
I dont think that the lsifx line is matched to the rt line, although in my opinion it is not essential to have the bi/dipoles matched to the front soundstage. In other words, you will be happy with them. Just my two cents. Welcome to the forum and take Doc's advice. He is "the man" here, especially in all matters concerning low frequencies.Graham

So what "is" matched to the RT series? I'm just looking for a good mate.
Also, I'm glad to be part of your forum. Thanks!!! -
I believe the FX or FXi series are matched with the RT series. These will be cheaper than LSis. All Polks are fairly similar, at least to my ears.Graham

RT = FXxxxi
RTi = FXixx
That is the basic statement. I don't think you will find a radical timbre change in using one, RTi vs RT, with the other.
LSi = LSi
Many have mentioned nice matching for the LSi's using Monitor series or SDA series speaker, both of which are vintage type.CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint. -
If that is the case. What is the big difference between the RT and the speakers that cost the big bucks? I mean, for my less than audiophilic ears, should I spend the money?
-
The big difference between the RT and the LSi series are the tweeters, cabinets and crossovers I think. If you like the RT series then stick with it. unless you have the cash for LSi's.Graham
-
Fair enough.
The more I spend, the more my ears seem to realize.
But how soon they forget. -
The LSi series, Polk wise, are 180 degrees in theory and in application, different, from the RT and RTi series speakers. The tweeters are different (VIFA), and the crossover, as in every application, must compliment the drivers.
Should you spend the money? Hell, I don't know, noone can answer that.
Will you be impressed by LSi vs RTi? Yes. Will you like it more? That is on YOUR ear, not mine. I think they sound very nice.

I don't have the specs on your Aiwa sub. It probably has less bass than your 70's. Tough call here. Normally yes, all to small for HT applications with a good sub. The 70's really benefit from small. But your Aiwa might be the weak link here."What we do in life echoes in eternity"

It is for sure, but is was my first sub so I really dont know what I've been missing (but I'm sure its alot). I will be getting an SVS PB1 in a couple of weeks. At that point do you recommend running the 70's at small. Thanks for your help.Everytime I think I'm out, THEY PULL ME BACK IN!!!!!!

Maurice,
I would set the 70s to small to allow them to focus on the midrange when you get the pb1.Graham -
