Tons of people at my work place are doing this. Drinking these shakes and expecting to lose miracle-like amounts of pounds while they do nothing to change their lifestyle; such as exercise.
We have people around my town who are preaching this like the gospel.
Anyone else heard of this?
I find it hard to believe that a person can take a shake, lose pounds, and expect them to stay off without out some sort of lifestyle change such as regular exercise.
Anyone disagree?

Totally absurd. I'll bet these same folks think you can take a pill to fix everything, aka better living through chemistry!

Thats why most diets fail. There is no miracle pill, shake, etc that will take the pounds off. Some will even do more damage than good and in the end only serve to seperate you from your money. The weight always comes back. Some simple lifestyle adjustments and eating habit changes are most effective for long term weight loss.

A person at work has already shelled out around $140 for this stuff. She has lost roughly 4 pounds in the last month.
I was like, hmmm. Got exercise?

I don't know what that stuff is. But what Slim-fast does is LIMIT your lunch to 200 calories and perhaps B-fast as well. Allows you an extra 300 calories in snacks and REQUIRES that you eat ONE balanced meal of 500-600 calories for dinner.

Add that up and you get 1200-1300 calories which is 700 below what is minimally necessary for the lowest recommended daily 2000 calorie diet. So, in a week you should, "doing nothing", lose 1-2 lbs. Depending on your weight.

There is no magic here, it's a calorie reduction diet. And it does not work if you don't count the calories or "cheat".

So if the above diet is similar and people follow it they would lose weight. But weight loss alone without some exercise will not bring "optimum" health. Yet weight loss is a good thing for most of people.

    Enjoy the shakes. lol

I spent 4 years training and working out hard during highschool. It has taken these 3 years out of highschool doing nothing and eating the same as before to begin to show signs of "letting it go."
I was offered a free trail with a $25 deposit "with a satisfied or your money back" she said just return what is left, I can refund your money should you not like it.
I asked her, what if I use it all and do not get any results. She told me flat out it was impossible to not see weight loss.
I am assuming it is a calorie limiter diet what was discussed. Replace 2 meals, then eat 3-5 small meals. Boost metabolism by increasing meals, then limit the calories. That is so revolutionary and brand new. I bet it is whatever was left of "said diet" and repacked.

Best thing people can do is to educate themselves first and foremost. Weight gain can be a more serious side effect of other medical problems too. One also has to realize as you get older your body changes in what it needs and how you digest foods. You can't keep eating at 40 like you did at 20. I know this sounds silly, but you also have to listen to what your body's telling you. Next time you have a craving for a good salad, thats your body telling you what it wants. It also tells you it wants ice cream too, lucky me, who am I to argue with my body.
I've been blessed with a good metabolism, I can eat a whole cheesecake and lose 2 lbs. Though once I hit 50, I can feel it slowing down some so I try to be more aware of what I eat and when. In men, testosterone plays a huge part, by the time you reach my age, you lost 50%. The only way to get it back is to supplement it. Sure, you can eat or drink other things to slow the loss down, Tea for example, but you can't stop the loss. Thats why older men start feeling run down, tired, lack of focus, can't get it up in the sack,....ok, should have left that last one out, this is a family channel. Your metabolism slows down, you start getting that spare tire, and before you know it, you turned into your grandpa. Because you feel tired, you don't exercise, plant your butt on the couch when you come home, the dog is wondering why that mile long walk is now 2 blocks, and the wife is saying "thats it ?"

If there's one thing I learned in my years about weight, your body, and age, it's that everything in your body works in conjuction with everything else, and how they all work together changes as you age. Simply cutting calories isn't going to provide a long term solution to managing your weight. Plus it lends itself to a pretty boring lifestyle of rice patties and crappy tasting shakes. Here's my tips for you, a common sense approach.

    1. Eat smaller portions but eat more often. Try not to eat late at night. Don't binge eat, or gorge yourself.

    2. Add variety- Don't eat the same things day in and day out. If your going to chow down on some cookies, offset it later with a salad or some other healthier alternative.

    3. Watch the whole grains- yeah, I said it. Despite what health nuts tell you, whole grains will make you fat.

    4. Sugar intake- limit it, stop with the sugary soda, you can still have a coke and a smile, just not 4 cans a day. Pay attention to the sugar content in your foods along with HFC.

    5. MOVE- take the dog for a walk, ride your bike, jump in the pool, have sex more often, a partner would help btw, do projects around the house or out in the yard. It doesn't have to be conventional exercise like hitting the gym or getting on the treadmill for half an hour, just keep busy.
