Need Advice on new 2-Channel Receiver for Dad

A few years ago I rebuilt an old Denon DRA-395 for dad that I picked up for free on CL. Well the Denon has failed again and dad is interested in getting a new 2-channel receiver.
He has a pretty basic setup - speakers are 80's era Acoustic Research, 3-way acoustic suspension (not sure of the model) and he has a Yamaha natural sound CD player. He's interested in adding a "B" set of speakers in the dining room so two speaker outs would be nice. Other than that he's just looking for a nice simple 2-channel receiver. This setup is in the living room and doesn't get turned up very loud - mostly background music.
Anyone have advice on some good units to check out? I'm not sure what his budget is yet but I figured it wouldn't hurt to find out what's out there first. Thanks

I have the HK 3490 linked above. Its a great 2 channel receiver if you dont need video switching. Its rated for 4 ohms so its got some good power to drive just about anything and has what you wanted to a T."....not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted."
