Like the title says, I just added a 3 Terabyte hard drive to my PC bringing my total storage capacity to 6.8 Terabytes. Most of it is for hi-rez audio storage and backup. The drive is a Western Digital Elements external and it cost me a whopping $169.99 plus tax. Even with the recent price increases in hard drives that's still lest than $60 a Terabyte. I remember buying my first internal 7200 rpm drive. It was 7.5 gigs and cost over $400!

Amazing isn't it how much larger faster and cheaper computers and products have became just in the last 5 years even.

    REGARDS SNOW
Well, I just pulled off the impossible by doing a double-blind comparison all by myself, purely by virtue of the fact that I completely and stupidly forgot what I did last. I guess that getting old does have its advantages after all :D

I'm not using it for primary so it's not giving me a number. Unless I'm being daft, which is quite likely.

Well, I "only" have 16TB of storage for my media/file server, but half of that is in an external RAID array for backups. So, I really only have 8TB total to work with in my file/media server, but there is no way I would go without backups; I learned that lesson the hard way (a couple of times to boot). As with Lasereath, I use an SSD as the boot drive in my laptop, and there is no way I would go back to a standard hard drive for that; it is just way too fast. I do, however, have 2 1TB drives in a RAID 0 for media storage in my laptop in addition to the SSD.

Gee... I remember my first IBM clone... 40MB HDD, Intel 386SX processor, 512K RAM... $1000. Just bought another clone a couple of years ago, dual optical drives, triple 1GB WD HDD, 16GB RAM, liquid cooled Intel Quad core i7 processor with a 1200 watt power supply for $1700...

Going further back, my first computer was an Atari 800 with 48K RAM with a 88K floppy drive... Used it to run Visicalc (spreadsheet) which could only do one page before it ran out of memory. With the Atari 825 printer, it was $3500. Probably spent more on the games... In fact, I still have one but it no longer connects to my TVs since it had a s-video connector.

That's the same number I've gotten with my Samsung SSD's. Used to get 6.0 with two Samsung 7200's in RAID 0, so it's an improvement.

You can use AS SSD and benchmark those SSD drives. This should be able to give you an idea how fast the drive performs compared to manufacturer specs. OP do you mind sharing where you picked up the external for such a great price?

When you upgrade the HD where do you put your existing files off of the original until it is installed so that you can then put them on the new HD?

First internal at 7.5 gigs...dang I am old. I remember installing my 8088 math co-processor chip so I could use my suitcase sized compaq portable to compile fortran. I think I had the 40 meg drive partitioned into two twenty meg parts. The 80's are a wonderful memory.

I remember those days. Once installed an Evergreen 486 upgrade kit on a 286, and pretty sure my first drive was 40 megs as well. Used to program my own config.sys and autoexec.bat files to optimally configure the PC based on what I was going to be doing at the time. Booted them off of floppies, of course, back when floppy disks were actually floppy.

With me music library roaring towards 500GB's I am starting to look at 1TB drives. My main storage is my macbook pro, which right now is running a 500GB drive at 7200RPM. I am going to have to give up some performance and go with a 1TB 5200RPM soon.

internal/external doesn't have much bearing. It's the speed of the actual drive and the connection that is important.

Skip the 1tb and go for a 2/3 TB. If your already at 500gb, you'll probably end up with like 400gb or so after format/install. I would go bigger.

    - Pardon my Ignorance ! What do you need all that storage space for? Beside video and audio files. Thinking about upgrading....but I am old school. Will never have the time to compress my cds again. I remember my first hard drive on a pc was 2gb and cost a wopping $200.00. Now a dvd w/4.5gb cost $.10. Amazing

I think you just answered your own question. I have nearly 1.5 TB of audio files alone. UNCOMPRESSED. Included are many SACD, DVD-Audio, and vinyl rips that can be upwards of 6 gigs. You'd be surprised how fast you can a 2 TB drive with losssless audio. If you start archiving blu ray video files uncompressed 3 TB can be used up quite quickly.

I keep all my music uncompressed, and there is only a handfull of tv shows that make it to my HD, so most of it is music.

3 TB 2/3 full and 2 TB backup of files on 3 TB full. I can't believe I already need a new 3TB drive for backup!! It's all SACD, DVD-A, vinyl rips and cd rips. All hi-rez.
