From what I can tell they are Monitor 5A's and it looks like the tweeters are peerless? I'd like to start refurbishing these as I think theyd be a great match for my Marantz 2245 I just finished up and would appreciate some direction.
Things I have seen on here
-Upgrade the xover components, what is liked? sonicaps and mills?
-dynamat the drivers
-seal the boxes
-jbweld on drivers
-some sort of seal where the speaker sits
-upgrade from wood screws (to what?)

Would appreciate any good link to solid directions, photo album is in the link.

Yea baby, you got the good stuff. Peerless indeed.

If it were me, I'd start with the crossover upgrades. Sonicap and Mills are great, although the current trend is Clarity Cap range for capacitors. I replaced all of my caps with the PX line from Clarity Cap. Soooo good.

You pretty much have it mapped out. The order in which you do these mods is entirely up to you.

I know Larry has sold out of the rings for these, so what is the best DIY alternative?

First let me say Welcome to the club. Now for your questions.

Things I have seen on here
-Upgrade the xover components, what is liked? sonicaps and mills?

Sonicap & Clarity Cap are probably the most popular amongst the group for caps. Mills are the most used resistors around here. Good audio quality caps and resistors are best. Considering how basic your crossovers are get the best you can afford. Your ears will thank you.

    -dynamat the drivers,

yes, but just on the basket is useful,

    -seal the boxes,

You can use Liquid Nails or something equivalent to seal the cabs.

    -jbweld on drivers,

yes, but just around the magnets, look for pics on here, you don't want to go to crazy and mess something up.

-some sort of seal where the speaker sits,

One of the guys on here sold gaskets, or you could go to michaels or joanns and get thin foam and make them yourself. This is the method I did and will continue to use. There is also always Mortite, which is like caulk that doesn't harden. Not a fan but some guys are.

-upgrade from wood screws (to what?)

Hurricane nuts and screws. one of the guys here also sell a brace you can use that will really lock them in place.

You could also use Black Hole or sonic barrier to really tighten up the sound of these little guys but now we are getting a little crazy in cost.

    Welcome to Club Polk!

You mean you're not even going to listen to them in stock form before you tear into them for an upgrade? You're an eager one! Mine are still stock and they sound "fabulous". Would they sound even better modded? Probably! But you should hear them first in any case.

They do sound wonderful! I was born a while after these speakers were made but I have always been a modder/hacker/tinkerer. I've had a Marantz 2245 for four years now and about a year a go the right channel started routinely cutting out. So my foray into DIY audio/modding started. My first soldering project was a cmoy, my second was restoring the 2245 and fixing the entire right channel (I'll post a link to some pics for anyone thats interested). So I tinker with everything from vintage audio to modern computers and programming. So although they do sound amazing, I am in the search of perfection!

-Back on topic, should I stick with the original values in my xover? two 12uf 50v and one 2.5 ohm and one 2.7ohm?

Yes stick with the original values but, from other posts, use something other than a electrolytic capacitor and go for a good non-inductive wire wound resister. Very nice and lots of fun.

    Nice score!
I have 5's and they sound great as it is.
I'm holding off on any upgrades for now as these sound better than others in my collection.

    Klipsch RB81, KG3.5, B&W DM602.5, Polk.
Subwoofers: Klipsch RW10, Triad ProSub Bronze.

I may do the same until I have all the funds to do this project at once. I'm not one for doing projects in steps!
