Just took delivery of an Oppo BDP-83 about a half hour ago, thanks to the deal that Rick posted. I'd been on the hunt for one for a few months, and couldn't pass up the $199.00 deal that he posted. Although it is used, I'd rate it a 8.5/10. I've only had a chance to run it through a few tracks on cd, and one kick butt performance of 'Rock and roll' on a Foo Fighters BD. PQ seems to be a bit sharper over my PS3, but CD playback is where I wanted the biggest improvement and I believe I got it. Mids are much more open, mid bass is stronger, maybe a bit too strong, but hopefully a mod to the 9's will help tame that a bit. Overall the SQ has taken a giant leap over the GDC-600, and PS3. I'm a happy camper so far.

Heres the bad part, I've got to go work now, I could spend all day going through tracks, doing some A/B, and the sorts. How come work always gets in the way?

Thanks for the comparison to the PS3 good info. Are you running it analog or digital?

    Thanks, 1c

Digital. Just dropped it in and hooked it up via HDMI, I've got to do a little reading on it so see what will be the best way. Can I use HDMI for dvd/bd playback and analog for CD playback? Hmmm....

Absolutely. You can hook up your 83 with HDMI, digital and analog to your avr - just them up to different inputs and you could a/b/c the different inputs.

Using the 2-channel analog inputs, you could also set your AVR to "Pure Direct" mode to bypass all of the digital processing circuitry and see if that makes any difference as well (although you will loose the sub output).

All sorts of ways to spend countless hours exploring features and settings and doing comparisons!

I had the original 60g PS3 and I can tell you as a CDP it is not very good. I went to a Rotel 1072 and left the PS3 behind as a CDP.

The Jolida JD100 bested the Rotel in my system but it is about to be up for sell as I am using a music server now.

I believe you'll also notice quite an improvement in standard DVD upconversion (if that matters to you). The Oppo is much better than anything I've ever had at DVD playback (and I've had a couple $1000 DVD players)...

I'll have to check that out today or tomorrow. I didn't get a chance yesterday to do any more music, but we did watch Ep. 1 last night, or at least half of it, BD load time seemed to be just a tad slower then the PS3, but personally I'm not too bothered by that.

Although I did have a WTF moment, is my player locked up? Oh, no, I'm just used to PS3 load times! Hopefully this weekend I'll get some good 'me' time and do some A/B with the PS3. I can say that my GDC-600 can't even begin to come close to the performance of the Oppo, but I'm not suprised that a 20 year old CD player has its faults. I still wan't to check out the analog playback of the Oppo, and I'll let you guys know how it sounds vs. HDMI. More to come.
