I need 2.0 speakers, something to push them and something to take my i-sources and make them the best they can be. I want to keep it around a grand. Seems like I can get better value in used pieces if they are compatible. Airplay would be ideal. Thanks!

It's gonna be tough to do everything on that budgete and get everything you want. I would start by deciding what's more important, getting the best sound quality or having extra features like Airplay.
I would start with speakers and an integrated amp and then worry about getting a good dock for your iDevices.
I would make this your first purchase - HK 3490. It's a very good, neutral sounding integrated with a few extra features like sub outputs, digital inputs, and pre-outs so that you could add an amp later on. Personally, I don't think you'll find anything else at close to the price that has the same mix of great sound and features.
From there, just pick out what speakers you want, it'll drive anything in your budget easily. What kind of sound are you looking for? For a more laid back sound, I'd recommend something like the LSi7. I've had the exact setup and it's great sound for the money. You could get a pair of LSi7 used for probably $350.
That leaves you almost $400, get a good iDock (someone else will have to chime in on that I don't know squat about them) and you should still have money left to buy a sub if you want, or cables or music or whatever. -
I'd trade volume for clarity if its a choice. Would that hk sound far & away better than the denon 1912 in a 2ch setup with the same speakers? Price is the same once you throw in the dock (actually $50 more on amazon).

That hk will destroy that particular denon, not even close. There are a couple nice demon integrateds out there, but nothing new in that same price range that will compare well with the hk.

I would make sure the dock sends the digital signal to the hk. You could look at the Pure i20 which I have and like. If you want to AirPlay (I.e., wireless), I would look at adding an Airport Express and use the optical out to the hk.
I have used the lsi7s with a small sub and like the combo a lot.
