I might still have a Sony MD somewhere in the garage. Seems like it had an issue ejecting but it did play.
Whatever it cost to ship from 73505 and you can have it.

People still use these? They didn't last that long did they?

George, I am thinking about it. Mike, Syndil....nice players but out of the range of what I wanted to spend. Gwh, PM sent.
Tool....yeah some still do use them. I know some musicians still use them to record their stuff with. Maybe someday they will be like TT's, tape decks and RtR's....back in "style"?!?--Gary--

Actually some people still swear by them, but yes, Sony no longer manufacturers Minidisc players. They discontinued production on their last MD unit last year.
The primary argument in favor of Minidisc is that the compression codec utilized by Minidisc, ATRAC, sounds much better than MP3 when compared at the same bitrate. Or to put it another way, ATRAC is much more efficient than MP3, meaning that you can match the sound quality of an MP3 at one particular bitrate with an ATRAC at a lower bitrate.
A Minidisc recorded at SP speeds is ATRAC-encoded at 292 kb/s, and most people are unable to distinguish this from the original recording. It is certainly good enough for use in a car or portable device. And there are still quite a few die-hard fans that enjoy Minidisc not only for the ATRAC compression, but for the entire experience of using the MD. I have to say, there is a certain amount of satisfaction to be had from handling those tiny square discs. I still have dozens of unopened MD packages waiting to be enjoyed. Each time I open one it's like a mini-Christmas, so I ration them out very slowly:
The only place I still regularly use Minidisc is in my car, where I still have a Sony ES MDX-C8970 head unit.
I have looked for a replacement for it several times over the years, but the saying "they don't make them like they used to" applies. After-market stereos nowadays look like they were designed by kids.
