I'm looking opinions from those who have heard, or currently use an Onkyo as Pre-amp and Emotiva XPA's for their powered amps, with the RTI-A 7 or 9's. I have heard the different opinions on different amps that are out there, but I am looking for opinions on how they sound.

For example, I have heard some reviewers mention brightness. How so?

I currently own the Onkyo NR-807.

I used an emotiva amp with a pioneer elite vsx01 thx and it was a little harsh but not that bad. For music it was horrible though. I think onkyo may be ok with the emo as I owned an onkyo before but never did pair it with an emo amp

I'm now in the anti-external-amp for home theater camp - unless I was using LSis or some other really inefficient or low-impedance speaker system. There are some really good-sounding AVRs that power normal speakers in normal rooms to great effect. I can think of plenty of things I'd add to my home theater before I'd buy a power amp, Emotiva or otherwise. But if your theater room is the size of a high school gymnasium or something along those lines, I can see the application.

    Two Channel Setup:

    Speakers: Wharfedale Opus 2-3
    Integrated Amp: Krell S-300i
    DAC: Arcam irDac
    Source: iMac
    Remote Control: iPad Mini

    3.2 Home Theater Setup:

    Fronts: Klipsch RP-160M
    Center: Klipsch RP-160M
    Subwoofer: SVS PB12NSD (X 2)
    AVR: Yamaha Aventage RX-A2030
    Blu Ray: Sony BDP-S790
    TV Source: DirecTV Genie

I currently use the XPA-5 with an Onkyo PR-SC5508 and it really sounds fantastic with my RTi A9's. I have also used this combination with my RTi A7's, both of the speaker combinations sound very good. I also used the XPA-5 with an Onkyo TX-NR708 all of these combinations sounded very good but the best combination so far has been the PR-SC5508 with the XPA-5 and the RTi A9's. I think you will be very happy with the Emo/Onkyo combo.
