The wife and I are looking to purchase new a new GPS, we had a TomTom but her family all use Garmin. I do not care what she wants just as long as it is a good one. What is a good unit to get?

I admit I get lost... lost in the drive, I put on some tunes and get in a zone and blast right past my exits. My wife does all the driving. The unit you have , does it have life time maps? Our Tom Tom is over 6 years old and the updates I heard cost an arm and a leg ( never checked in on this)
