What's up with people who scratch the hell out of their CD's, DVD's and games?

Ever let a friend borrow your CD's, DVD's or games and they give it back to you all scratched up to hell?

Seriously, it makes me wonder what the hell they do to those dics....And not just the disc. I hate getting back broken cases.

I borrowed The Fast and the Furious from someone at work. The DVD was so scratched up that one scene would freeze for about 15secs. The other movies I borrowed from him were also scratched up like crazy.

I see too many people treating a stack of cd's like a deck of cards. I don't lend out anything. Cept' for like two people. Those are damn expensive little frisbees.

When CD's first came out, my Dad was trying to tell people how CD's were indestructable and could not be scratched....

So he threw the CD on the ground, stomped it, kicked it, smashed it, etc, and then said "Watch this, it'll play." Sure enough, he put it in.....did it play? EL NO! The thing had more scratches than a LSi speaker when Russ gets through with it.

I read an article once on the validity of warnings that come with blank CDs. Sure enough, those warnings are there for a reason. What suprised me, however, is that writing with an innappropriate pen on the label side is more harmful to the data than your normal wear and tear type scratches.

I don't think normal use causes much damage... certainly not anything that prevents use. I still have my very first CD, Top Gun soundtrack bought in 1987 (or 88), and it essentially looks new.

I think the worst damage comes from stacking them or sitting them around not in the case (I've noticed a LOT of people set discs on top of gear), and for DVDS... putting them in the case but not locking it down. Rentals are especially bad. I told our local rental place about a disc.. we returned it, it was SO bad it skipped parts, the spindle lock in the case was broken so it rattled around, etc. Sure enough, next time I was in there is was back on the shelf. I assumed they'd pull it.

We've had good luck with discs from the library.. maybe people think they're more likely to have to pay for a damaged disc?

Anyway, we rarely loan out discs. We loaned out some VHS tapes once.. my treasured SchoolHouse Rock set loaned to my wife's friend with kids... and two came back trashed. That was the end of THAT.

dont lend mine out except to a few trusued individuals..98% of my cd's still look brand new and some are quite a few years old..
if my **** came back scratched that person would definitly be buying me a new one..
for example lent a friend a book (simple enuff, hard back) gave it back to me looked like hell grease stains, water damage.. unexceptable.......i just asked him...was it really in this condition when you borrowed it? had a new one the next day...

I've wondered about those people as well, organ. Is it THAT big of a deal to hold a CD/DVD by its edges until you place it in the player? My DVD's not only have no scratches but zero fingerprints as well. The rentals? Forget it - unless you pick it up on the first day of release it's going to soon look like hell, but as long as it plays well, I suppose.

ATCVenom is right, people either don't think about it or just don't give a damn. That's why I don't loan out my DVD's, but if somebody offers to let me borrow theirs, I treat it well. In fact, if it has prints, I'll wipe them off from the inside outward, as you should with a soft cloth.

I never lend our DVD's out anymore. Did it twice I think and they came back with fingerprints on them. That put a quick end to that.

Anybody else keep theirs in the jewel case, and then inside a 6" ziploc bag? I do. Well over a 1,000 of them, and each one in a ziploc bag. The way I see it, if airborne contaminants will adhere to a mirror or a window.... well, you get the picture. The jewel box alone will not keep out those particles, so "I" will.

And never, under any circumstances, do my cd's leave my home. Friends or not, they all get the same answer.

as for writing on the label... the data of the cd is actually stored on that side, the side it's read from is just protection for the data. that's why when you clean a CD you don't erase it seeing as how cd cleaners simply remove the top layer of the disk. that's why using the wrong kind of pin can hurt it, the ink could interfere with the ability of the cd to be read... just fyi...

If they have kids, there is your answer. My son thrashes his dvds. He just will not listen. Hey he is 2. As for my dvds, he knows not to touch. That also goes for my system. He gets the old Pioneer DVL-700 to abuse. Yes, I have had to open it up twice to get dvds out of the player. Oh well. They get older and I will train them.

I'm with George, I keep mine in clear resealable covers that cost $5.00 for a hundred. The guys at Polk laughed at me when I pulled out my SACD copy of DSOTM, but I don't care. In ten years from now the case and disc will still look/sound as good as the day I bought it. I call it protecting my investment.

Taking care of CDs and DVDs comes from my days of handling vinyl. Not one of my LPs have fingerprints on them. This practice carried on with CDs and DVDs. The people who mishandled their records have the same attitude towards CDs and DVDs, plus they think those things are indestructible.
Most of my LPs are kept in a plastic sleeve to protect the cover art. Eventually all of them will be sleeved.

No words to describe man...those are the people who wrap deep dish pizza with hot dog and dip them to A1 steak sauce but never wash their hand, plus they wear rain coat for any occasion..."brain wash" is the generic name

My kids don't touch any Cd's or Dvd's never have, never will until they are old enough.. I'm picky i don't lend movies or cd's to anyone.. I always hold by the edges and keep them in a case.

My 5 year old changes cd's in her computer, you have never seen such a steady hand and gentle as a kid could be, My 15 month old on the other hand is a terror. everything is away and out of reach for that monster angel on mine

My son does this all the times but with all do respects, he handles the DVD properly, even better than I do:) but the problem is: he never put the DVD back in to the box and where it belong to...I always have to go to look for it and usually find it lay inside his DVD player . May be I need to write up a guideline and force him to follow the rule, but then I'm not sure it's a good idea either since I always under estimate the "reputation" of a teenager...:D
