Bass Traps and Acoustic Panels - Do they work?

All these threads popping up regarding acoustic panels and traps got me thikin'.

Ever wonder if your sound system might benefit from bass traps (not talking fishing here) and/or acoustic panels but didn't want to spend the $$$ to find out. Well here is a try before you buy solution that may help.

Yes, I do enjoy the Red Green Show and I am sure I'll be laughed out of Club Polk for this but here it goes...
Caution, only try this when your spouse or significant other is out of the house...:redface:


Remove the seat cushions from the sofa. These should be fabris an not leather (or vinyl :eek:) as leather will tend to reflect sound.

Place the cushion to the wall adjacent to the speaker at the reflection point. Try moving it to different positions to find the best spot

Also try placing the cushions on the wall behind the speakers.


Yes, I actually tried this and was quite amazed with the difference that it can make. I may be looking into some real acoustic panels and room treatments in the future.

    Did you use duck tape to mount the cushions ?

    You must use boat seat cushions if you want the true Red Green experience.

    As a side note, corners are the place where bass builds up the most and 4 or 5 rolls of Owens Corning Pink insulation stacked in a column in corners will work look bad and take up lots of space, but work very effectively.
