In Ceiling Speaker Decision
Hi guys...
I also have one of those homes pre-wired for in-ceiling sound, so looking at the Vanishing series from Polk here..
Basics:
TV -- LG 65LW6500
AVR -- Onkyo TX-NR809
I have 5 pre-wires in my ceiling (3 in front, 2 in rear) so I plan to do 5.1. That being said, I'm having a hard time figuring out which ceiling speaker is going to be better for my particular setup. I do have room for a full sub in a corner, and so thought to use that. Otherwise, the room is about 25x20.
Any suggestions/commentary will be appreciated. Budget would be around $2000.

Hrmm... Probably not going to like this, but if your intention is a home theater setup, in-ceiling speakers are not the way to go. In-ceiling speakers are for providing background music, not for serious listening or home theater.
However if you are absolutely stuck with in-ceiling speakers, then I would look for something that can be aimed at a sharp angle towards the listening area, rather than something that projects straight down.

putty the ceiling holes and paint them. Then buy normal speakers

The Polk RTS series received excellent reviews and from time to time you can find them on polk directs ebay store. Sonance and Paradigm are also known for making fairly decent in-ceiling speakers. I would look for a model that has a built in enclosure, most in-ceiling speakers use the ceiling itself as an enclosure, which is not ideal, especially on the first floor of a two story home. Plus, having the built in enclosure should simplify installation and worries about additional baffles or sound deadening. Since the precut holes are already there, it should be a matter of only modifying the holes and then securing them in with a couple turns of a screwdriver.

I have a 5 channel HT setup and I utilize a pair Polk LC265i in-wall speakers for my fronts, a LCi-C in-wall speaker for my center and pair LC80FX in-ceiling speakers for my surrounds. Give these speakers adequate power via a quality 5 channel amp and I believe most would be quite impressed with their performance for HT. I purchased and installed these speakers on the advice of a few members of this forum that I respect and on the advice Polk customer service (who I trust).
Every time I watch a movie, I am truly amazed at how really good the Polk LCi series speakers are for HT. You might want to look into them. Just my opinion. YMMV. -
In-ceiling is passable for surrounds since they are supposed to be mounted above the listening position anyway. But for fronts/center, you want the tweeter to be as close to ear level as possible.

So.. based off of the responses I got.. looking at this.
255c-LS Center Channel
2 x 265-LS for R/L Channel
2 80 F/X-LS for Rear Surround
DSW-Pro-660WI 12" Sub
Total cost -- $2179.75, little over my budget, but meh. Anyone object? -
crutchfield has in ceiling speakers that have a nice angled tweeter meant for surrounds sound
