I found a set of 1.4's for 150 local and am hoping to hear back from the seller tonight or tomorrow. I want to go listen to em, but they look REALLY GOOD in the pics.
I know lots about Maggies, but not familiar with the 1.4's. Anything in particular I need to know? It seems they go 10hz lower than the MMG's, I believe they are older than them and thats about all I know.
I have auditioned the 3.6QR's, 3.7's and MMG's and liked them all.

Nice speaker... great price. If you can handle a bit of a project, they will reward you for your efforts. Delamination is the big concern here, but the repair is really quite simple and I can walk you through it. The main thing is that the repairs would be labor intensive and tedious. My MG-20's took the better part of two weeks to get their mojo back, but the work needing to be done was far more involved than the 1.4's would be.
Give them a listen and don't be afraid to push them a bit to induce the "Maggie buzz". If you hear that, offer 75.00 and tell him they need a complete rebuild to function again. The kit you would get from the good Folks at Magnepan would be about 75.00, and they also have wonderful tech support to guide you through it.

John: I planned to attempt to get them to buzz if they are going to , I have some music just for that. I figured you could walk me through the delamination problem if there is one
I planned to take Tasha with me to demo them (if thats possible) to make sure she's cool with the situation.
Now just waiting to hear back from the seller to see if they are still around. They were posted at 2 pm and I emailed the seller about 10:45ish so hopefully no one else saw them.......

Sweet!
Holding off any type of celebration until they are setup in my home. Its bad enough considering I am on Prednisone and euphoria is one of the side effects, along with nervousness and anxiety lol....

I had many sleepless nights waiting for the -20's to get here and quite a few more after I opened them up. According to the guys at Maggie, the repairs I did have not been attempted in the field more than a handful of times, and none were aware of a successful outcome. The driver panels on the 20's are riveted together, with the mylar/wire diaphram suspended between two magnetic plates. The trouble is that there is no jig in the field for correctly aligning the two plates, and they repel each other strongly during teardown and reassembly. This makes it almost impossible to reassemble them. What I did was use bolts that were exactly the same size as the rivets being removed, and used nuts to secure them in exactly the same place as the rivets were. Dis-assembly and re-assembly was easy after that. Magnepan may even rethink the idea of not offering a kit for them now because of this method.
The 1.4's have only the one plate, and easy access. There will be no sleepless nights over these. just lost of elbow grease and enjoyment. By the time you are done, you will have built them yourself, and believe me, DIY is the best sounding gear you will ever hear. The Gear... Interesting thread I found on that site john:

Not too worried about any elbow grease that may be needed. I have all the time in the world on Sunday's while my wife works.
This is also assuming the worst case. I am hoping that if I get them they dont need it."....not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted." William Bruce Cameron, Informal Sociology: A Casual Introduction to Sociological Thinking (1963) -
Looks like I might miss out on them. Seller just responded that someone is coming to look at them in 30 minutes. If they are still around after that I might have a shot.

I will let you know how they sound when they get here.
Sorry to hear the news bro... keep your eyes peeled as they are all over the place down there. Use SearchTempest, and you will find a dozen pairs within 150 miles. Yup, it was more that they were 10 mins aways, at a good price and seemed to be in good shape.
