My DYI Acoustic Panels

I finally got around to putting together some Acoustic Panels for our main listening room. This was a cost that I always had issue with as our room is located in the basement, with concrete floors, covered by carpet and pad. Ceiling is a drop type with 2'x2' so called "Acoustic Panels". But, I could hear still hear a "few" notes bouncing around.

Well, I can say without a doubt, this "cost" was cheap compared to the return on investment. Even my wife could hear an immediate difference in most all the aspects of the sound stage.

Our listening area is far from a perfect lay out, especially for an SDA set-up, but the new addition of a few panels has made a nice improvement overall.

The most notable improvement for me has to be the imaging is now spot on, the vocals are much more clear and in perfect center stage. Also the entire stage has taken a step or two back and has become much deeper.

I purchased most of the materials from ATS Acoustics, I didn't take any pics of the building process, did post a few of the finished product.

Thanks guys, We both chose the color of the room and I picked the material color. Anyone that hasn't incorperated some kind of Acoustic Treatment into their listening areas is missing out. These simple panels have made a believer out of me. Not a whole lota money spent for such a good return.

My wife picked the color of my DIY panels. I have some panels that will be here Tuesday from GIK, I am super excited about them. And you are right everyone needs to try room treatments they make a world of difference..

I wanted to spend as little as possable, so I ended up buying the House Brand, the six pack of 2"x2'x4' for $59.00. The panels are very dense and rigid.

I haven't seen the O.C. 703/705 to be able to compare. I'm happy with the material I ended up with. Also purchased the cloth covering from ATS. Picked up a cheap material elsewhere to cover the back of the panels.

I'm a cheap ****,so I wanted to experiment with some panels just to see (hear) what I was missing. I will be making some more in the near future.

I am thinking of trying, even though my room is pretty "dead" as it is. If I clap really hard, I hear no echos.

If you were too clap in my room you would blow your ear drums out. I really need too find a way too get some and soon not later.

    Those look super. Great job!

I can't tell for sure armchair quarterbacking and looking at your second photo (and am guessing you centered on short side walls for symmetry/aesthetics) but your first reflection point might be a foot or so farther into the room from your back wall.

If I'm right (and Mrs. agrees ), moving the side panels would even further improve room response.

This is a poor image, but hopefully helpful as a double-check.

    Is the room carpeted?

Yes,You are absolutely right, the "right" side panel could come out further but there is a 2'x4' recess in the wall (pic # 1). I simply centered the panel on the wall space between the corner and the recess.

The room is not perfect, it has angles and is impossable to set up on the "long wall" which is 28'. I'm planning to play with placement and adding a few more panels, it's still an experiment at this point.

No it is not so that is one of the things I am going too work on. I have a 5x8 rug that I am going to hang on the back wall and put a 2" trap the same size behind it.
