I just had the S#%t scared out of me this evening. I was coming home and was turning into my drive and my truck just up and died , shut off, stopped the F@#k running as I was turning. I lost power stearing and was heading for a ditch a very big ditch,( I am 6' 1" and if i stand in this ditch there is another 5' of earth above me.)
I do not know what caused this to happend and aim to find out,it was strange because all guages on dash shut down but radio and heater still worked. I put truck in park and turned key and it fired right up,everything is normal
Any guesses? it's an 04 dodge 1500 w/ 36 + miles on it with clean service record.

3 days ago, a guy in a White Ford pickup almost veered off the fwy ramp, hit the dirt and gravel on the shoulder, slipping and draggin on his rear wheels, 180' turned and steer towards me (I am following behind him to enter the fwy).
I immediately stopped (and the vehicles behind me) and wait for the guy to regain control of his car. That guy is so out of control of his car and if he comes another 10', I probably would not see the daylight again.Trying out Different Audio Cables is a Religious Affair. I had something like that happen to me once before. Turned out to be a loose cable from the battery to the alternator. Go to an empty parking lot and try turning hard in both directions. If it repeats you can at least tell the shop what to do to look for the problem and how to reproduce it.Turntable: Empire 208

fuel pump/filter would be a good guess. I don't know Mopar stuff, best thing would be to see if you can get some codes read from local parts store and proceed from there.Shoot the jumper.....................BALLIN.............!!!!!

Batteries are used for starting the truck. If it is loose and power went out it's probably not the battery.
It might be a bad alternator.
I have owned some nice Dodge cars but after owning them and having to fix them for problems that Dodge should have been able to avoid by using Quality Parts, I will never buy another Dodge again. I have a Camry. -

Incorrect. The output from the alternator goes through the battery in at least some electrical systems, so the alternator does not directly provide power.Turntable: Empire 208

So I believe that everyone is right and nobody is right on. The only indication of electrical malfunction was your saying the dash guages went out. If the engine quit most of the guages would stop indicating. Did the Dash Lights go off. You said the radio and heater still worked so It does not seem electrical from a common point of view however there are some electronic control items and relays that can do what you have described. As someone mentioned above the fuel pump is very suspect here as the internal filter/sock can plug up with tank debris and choke off the fuel supply. As soon as the engine cuts off the pump shuts down, releases suction and the debris floats away. That's the easy story and it would be nice for you if it is...however if it is one of those electronic control devices or intermittent relay then you could end up with a ghost and if that is the case...go shopping and trade it in to a dealer and don't pass it on to an unwitting civilian like yourself. This fault may be easy to find using the Wiggle test. Pop the hood, crank it up then gently and methodically wiggle every connection under the hood related to power, fuel and ignition. Start with the ground wire coming off the computer. If there is a loose connection, you will know it if the engine stumbles.>

I took truck in and had them check for an error code..... NO CODE. It has never done it ( topped running) again. After doing some searching on the net I came to learn that ther is many things that could cause this and the most probable is the CAM & CRANK sensor going out or has drawn moisture.
The guages stopped indicating RPM,voltage etc... but radio and heater was still working. I do not remember if check engine light came on or not, TOO WORRIED ABOUT DITCH AND THE CAR COMING AT ME FROM OTHER LANE. I put in park and turned key and
started right up.
I have owned 3 Dodge products From a 1986 DODGE MIRADA and a 1993 1500 sport 4X4 all had less problems than both of the FORD products I also owned. This truck I have now has had no problems until this.

If it has the original battery I would change that first, then the crank sensor.
