^ I am with ya then! The speaker cabinets had no clear coat. And most of the necks on my guitars had no lacquer. And the ones that did, I removed the lacquer on the back. Oiled, used steel wool and had a much smoother neck. I was thinking you meant lemon/mineral oil in general was bad for wood.....unfinished wood that is.

Ok, that's different then. However, I would recommend using something other than the 3 products you mentioned. In particular, linseed oil (boiled or not) will build up, become gummy and darken with age. A danish oil like Watco would offer greater protection from moisture issues and last longer.

For real wood cabinets try Howards Restore-A-Finish after cleaning.

That is a shellac based product used as a really cheap way to make a worn out finish look a little better. It doesn't last long on any surface that gets use, tends to become brittle and flakes off. It should be avoided.

Those 3 products have been used for years by guitarists. There are other alternatives no doubt. And I always wipe down my guitars after playing. Other than darkening the wood a little over time the boiled linseed oil is great. IMO anyways. And I never leave my guitars in an area with moisture anyways, always in the case. So that is not an issue either.

I was thinking more the acoustics for the wood being dry. By dry I don't mean brittle, just not over-saturated with oils. As acoustic guitars age they get better from the wood being a bit drier. For electric I doubt it would make much difference.

It was lemon oil that was told to me to avoid on acoustics, but to use instead an oil better suited for guitars that will protect but not be too oily.

I've used it anyway with no ill effects, but I had one old 1965 Harmony setup locally and it came back with a nice guitar shine that isn't wax or oily but made a difference. I have to find out what it was, it worked really well.

Depends on who you talk to I guess. I've head some guitarists using carnuba wax, Planet Waves, AxeWax even turtle wax. I've had very good luck with boiled linseed oil as well as lemon oil over the years. So that's what I will be sticking with.

I think we have derailed this thread enough now.

good info. It would seem what is good for guitars should be good for wood speakers to, but there must be more to all of this. I'll do some research.

I'll look into the boiled linseed oil. Sorry OP if we derailed your thread, but I think there is some great starts to research this topic, for both guitars, speakers, and any other wood furnishings.

No, moisture as in humidity....even hand sweat.

I am usually on the same page with ya....but not with hand sweat. Most guitarist, myself included, wipe down their guitars after use anyways. Matter of fact I usually even wash my hands before playing.

But like I said it depends on who you talk to. I am almost 41, been playing on and off since I was about 16. I've used lemon oil with great success. A little searching you'll see many others use it as well. I have even heard of people using lavender oil! I have also used tung and danish oils before.

Yeah you are right. But to keep a neck straight, that's what truss rods are for. Not the oil ya use.

I put my speakers in the back of my flatbed every time I go through the car wash. Once with the grills on, then I head back through again with the grills off. On the second pass the guys always look at me like I'm nuts ... that is, until I explain to them that I'm an audiophile.

My guitar neck is steel reinforced, no adjustable truss rod. The best way to keep it straight is to keep it away from my drunk friends who think they can play garage band annihilated with my guitar.
