RIP to an original Mother

Jim Sherwood, a sax player (and more) with Frank Zappa?s legendary band The Mothers Of Invention, passed away on Christmas Day (Dec. 25). He was 69 years old. A cause of death has yet to be determined.

Sherwood was a classically-trained multi-instrumentalist who was part of Zappa?s free-wheeling ensemble from the start, playing baritone and tenor saxophone, percussion and adding vocals to such landmark albums as their 1966 debut, ?Freak Out!,? and their 1970 final album, ?Weasels Ripped My Flesh.?

After The Mothers split up, he continued to play off and on with Zappa, as well as appearing in his cult classic film ?200 Motels,? playing a newt rancher infatuated with a vacuum cleaner.

A childhood friend of Zappa?s, Sherwood earned the nickname ?Motorhead? early on. But unlike Lemmy Kilmister?s definition of ?speedfreak,? Sherwood?s moniker came from his love of working on automobiles. His final musical project was The Grandmothers, which featured a variety of musicians who had performed with Zappa over the course of his career.

Read about that a couple of weeks ago. Zappa always had the best band surrounding him.

    R.I.P. Motorhead.

A good man, but not one of the original MOI. And far from being technically proficient on any musical instruments. He lent the band "teen appeal" in Frank's words. The original Mothers were so ugly, Ted Cassidy could've lent them teen appeal.

George, does most of this gang know who Ted Cassidy is (was)... or are they too dang young?
Well... given the context of this thread... maybe not.

I have never seen 200 motels, is it available on Dvd or Blu Ray? I liked Freak Out, my first taste of the Mothers was Overnite sensation, I also liked live at fillmore with mudshark on it, I guess I will have to check out more of the earlier Mothers stuff. R.I.P. Jim Sherwood.

200 motels is a bit out there. Try Absolutely Free or Just Another Band From L.A.

200 Motels is available on DVD. In attendance both nights for those last Fillmore concerts. The Mudshark was actually one of the low points there was so much damn good music they played. And it was also everybody's first exposure to "Here's my two new drummers, Aynsley Dunbar." They played The Mudshark as the encore at Carnegie Hall too, which was a real bummer. Give us a real fat instrumental to close the show, or least something that Kaylan and Volman could sink their teeth into, not one of those "talkies".

That edition of The Mothers was the best band I ever heard.

Wow George so your saying that the vinyl copy I now hold in my hand Mothers-Fillmore East June 1971 can be one of the shows that you attended? How cool is that, how many nights were there, is this LP recorded on one of the nights you attended? I will look for the dvd copy of 200 motels. Thanks George, As frank says on the back of the LP Dont forget to register to vote F.Z.
