I have a pair of RTi12's and have blown a tweeter in one of them. What is Polk's address to send the blown tweeter back and have it replaced? The speakers are still in warranty.

I called at 4 PM and got a message, whats up with that?

    Thanks for the replies,

I forgot about MLK day, I work a crazy schedule, so often I'm unaware of days of the week and holidays, thanks for the reminder.

I blew the driver, dang it!
Sunfire amp maybe too powerful, though its rating falls within the 12's specs.

    Thanks again!

No, you had the volume too high, the Sunfire clipped and that's what caused the tweeter to cook. That's really not something that would be covered under warranty, but Polk will likely take care of you anyway.

Interesting read from the RTi MANUAL:
    SAFE LIMITS OF OPERATION
Your Polk Audio Loudspeakers are constructed of the highest quality materials for years of trouble-free performance. However, damage to loudspeakers can occur when an amplifier, regardless of its wattage, is made to play at higher listening levels than its power can clearly produce. This is usually beyond the ?noon or 1 o?clock? position on the volume control. Operation at this level can result in very high levels of audible distortion originating in the amplifier, which can add a harsh, gritty sound to your listening material. If you hear distortion, TURN IT DOWN. Contrary to popular belief, a speaker is more likely to be damaged by trying to get too much volume from a low-powered amplifier or receiver than from a high-powered one.

Polk CS will get 'er done.

Dropping a tone arm can also do wonders for tweeters, vintage-ly speaking.

F1nut, So you can tell all of this from the Mars Hotel?

I'll tell you one thing, I have an oooooooooooold Polk center channel speaker that is connected to the same amp and I've had zero problems with it, zero. The RTi12's fairly regularly blow drivers. I think outsourcing to China has produced some inferior drivers.
I also have some oooooooooooooold Cerwin Vegas connected and I've had zero problems with them, zero, notice a trend?

    mdaudioguy,
From your posting: "Contrary to popular belief, a speaker is more likely to be damaged by trying to get too much volume from a low-powered amplifier or receiver than from a high-powered one." Are you familiar with the Sunfire amp and the genius of the physicist Bob Carver who designed the amp? Next theory please.

I haven't noticed one. I've got 11 of these same tweeters in one room - haven't blown one, yet. If this happened regularly and was a trend, you'd read about it all over these pages. I'm sure that manufacturing defects play a part in some percentage of failures, but I'm convinced that a greater amount are due to other issues. Either way, if you're good to Polk, I'm certain they'll be good to you.

I was just quoting your manual. I'm familiar with Carver, and the Sunfires are pretty good stuff. The only point there is that all gear has its limits. Maybe you didn't hit the limit, maybe you did. None of us were there with you. We all have different ideas of loud and too loud. Call Polk and talk with them about it. Then come back and post about the resolution.

Thanks for the replies mdaudioguy, I think however I'll look at other speaker manufacturers, I've had too many problems with the newer Polks. I've been an audio enthusiast since the 70's and have been through all kinds of gear, the RTi12's have been a problem. Polk customer service is second to none, they have always treated me more than fairly but I dont like the failure rate of their drivers. I'll leave it at that as I'm sure a whole bunch of know-it-all quasi-audio "experts" will follow this posting up with all kinds of assertions from afar, like Miss Cleo the seer I'm sure they can diagnose all my gears faults from the comfort of their recliners.
    Peace.

    Take care.

I'll enjoy my Carver TFM-42 wide open on my A9's which are the replacement of your application and not blow a tweeter. Cause I haven't and won't. It's not hard to figure out when something is wrong.

Things break because something outside of the safe parameters is causing it. You can take that whatever way you wish but that's the facts man.

    Miss Cleo suggests operator error.

Yep. Doesn't prove where the problem originated, but it's surely not a good defense for the operator.
