I have started using JRiver exclusively but still have Winamp and itunes in my computer.
If i delete the Winamp completely will this wipe out the files also or will they still be safe in JRiver?
I have so many duplicates that come up in my Squeezebox and want to eliminate this crap but i am in over my head i think.
My computer is for google searches, email,Polk Forum and ****.Anything beyond this and i get confused.

You'll be fine to uninstall Winamp. Your files are saved in a folder which Winamp will see as a library or directory where it plays your files from their saved location.

Windows media player likes to take all of my Itunes music and duplicate it as well. I hate that, it's annoying and slows down my computer. it took me forever to figure out how to make it stop, I can't even remember how I did it. I do not use Winamp anymore, all I used it for was decompressing illegally downloaded music. idk what that other thing is.

in Winamp you should be able to figure out how to make it to where it doesn't copy files into it's library, either that or doesn't duplicate them.

You're safe deleting winamp. Just be careful if you decide to nuke iTunes... it SHOULDN'T delete any of your actual music, but depending on how you have the files stored, I'd use caution.

Realistically, all of your music files should be stored independently of any of the music playing software on your system. As for eliminating duplicates, that can be a PITA. I'm still in the midst of a several-year project to clean up all the music files on my system, eliminate duplicates, clean up ID3 tag data, etc... anymore though, I've gotten lazy and it's easier to either pop a single CD into the player or just use Pandora to pull up background music. Someday though....

It is a pain in the arse.
I am entertaining getting a somewhat inexpensive computer just for music files and run the squeezebox from that and ditch all teh files on this one.

Just download the ISO file, burn it to a CD, and install it on any old (or new) PC. It's easier if you install it with a monitor attached, but once it's up and running, you can disconnect the monitor and do everything remotely. So easy, it's ridiculous. I built an affordable little, dedicated music server with a low-power CPU (Intel Atom) that runs 24/7, but only uses something like 13W max. It resides on my network, so it doesn't necessarily have to be anywhere near my other computers or my music rigs. Oh yeah, Squeezebox Server is part of the installation - feeds all of my Squeezebox players. Read all the documentation - especially the FAQs. They've also got a nice little forum there, too. Yes, I'm a fan!

It replaces your current OS, so if there's anything on there you want to save, copy it to somewhere else first.

Zingo's got a computer set up with Vortexbox for sale in the FM currently. Asking $100, IIRC. Ad states he was interested in a local deal, but maybe you can work something out with him.

I'd be carefull deleting any of windows programs. Seems they purposely made most to run in some way with others and deleting one program can cause others not to work properly. Been there done that.

I don't think deleting any Windows programs was on the table. He was talking about deleting Winamp, a third-party media player. Hopefully, he's moving forward with an even better solution.
