Ran across this on the interweb recently... "One band a day, every day, 28 Daytrotter Session songs each week"
http://www.daytrotter.com/
Live/studio recordings from a small studio in Rock Island, Illinois, one of the coolest small towns I've ever visited, btw. Spent some time at the arsenal years ago...
Requires a membership, but you can get a free trial. MP3 versions are downloadable during the trial.
Never heard of 99% of the artists, but there are a few real gems to be found.
A few highlights for me:
Iron & Wine - Tree by the River and Naked as We Came are just ridiculously beautiful.
Wilco - 4 songs from their most recent, The Whole Love, including the moving, 11-12 minute epic One Sunday Morning (Song for Jane Smiley's Boyfriend).
Death Cab for Cutie - Recorded in 2008 - 4 solid performances. If you're a Death Cab fan, every song is just plain good.
Others I've enjoyed - Bon Iver, Cage the Elephant, Dashboard Confessional, Jay Bennett, Moby, Okkervil River, Social Distortion, Titus Andronicus... There are probably more than a few hidden gems as well, but I'll probably never get around to listening to such acts as Holy F*** and Holy S***... Yes, actual bands, evidently (without the asterisks!), among many, many, many that I'll not likely invest enough time in.
