Best way to hook up a 2.1 to a TV.

Sometime in the future I want to hook up two bookshelf speakers and a sub to my TV. This is in my man room, so don't need anything to fancy. I am using the speakers on my computer with an Adcom 535 amp. I have looked at a few pre amps but didn't see a sub output. Did I just miss it? Is there a better option? Trying to stay around $100. I guess I could always get a receiver and sell the amp. I have always gotten good help here and hope someone can help me on this.

I would just find yourself a used receiver (or a clearanced out one that's a couple years old, but new). Are you planning on hooking up the amp to the receiver, or do you just have it now?

Receiver without preouts will be easy to come by and fairly cheap.

An old integrated would work too from Sansui, Kenwood, Phillips, Yamaha, though the receiver for what your needs are may be cheaper. Local craigslist will yield lots in the under 100 buck catagory.

You have an amp. Grab a stereo Pre-Amp on the cheap off ebay...

Use a sub's speaker level input capabilities rather than sweating a Pre's lack of a sub-out. This'll also put your cross-over capabilities in the hands of your sub.

Easy peasy nice and easy... (where'd I hear that?)

Can someone explain how this will all hook up, so I don't get something wrong? I am using an Infinity PS-8 sub that was given to me. Sounds decent when hooked up to my computer.

Well, it really all depends on how you want to handle things. You can either get a receiver, and hook up the R/W RCA connections - or you can connect the left and right speaker wires, and run the rest of the system off of the sub. How do you plan on making things work, and what are your plans?

Think I will get a pre amp and go that way. I know the TV goes to the pre amp and pre amp to amp. Just not sure how to hook the amp to the sub and speakers.

You should have speaker leven in and outs on the back of your sub, you'll run all of your speaker wires into the sub (input) and then connect a second set to the (output) on the back of the sub, to your speakers. Should be fairly simple, just make sure you don't cross any wires and get the +/- correct. Good luck!

Might help if we knew what gear...exactly, your trying to hook up.

Normally, you use coaxle interconnect cables from the pre's front left and right outputs to the left and right inputs on the amp. The speakers are then connected to the amp and the sub is connected by the sub out on the pre or AVR, with a coax interconnect to the subs in. Since we don't know what exactly you have it's hard to be more specific.

Cody----My sub is an Infinity PS-8 and doesn't have outputs.

Tony---Did you read my first post? Most of the pre amps I have seen don't have a sub out, but I may have just missed it. I may have to just get a receiver and sell my amp.

    Here...
    http://www.crutchfield.com/S-gHunqO7woBT/p_108PS8/Infinity-PS-8.html

If this is in fact your sub, it had speaker level inputs, the red and black binding posts on the sub amp. You'll have to connect that way if your using a pre amp without sub output.

Speaker-level Inputs: The left and right gold-plated 5-way binding posts allow you to connect the subwoofer to a receiver/amplifier using speaker wire.

Just saw this... Hmmmm... I'll let the experts chime in, but I'm guessing you'll have to run amp to speaker to sub, although I don't see why they dont have outputs....

Hmmmm... Go back to the link I gave you earlier, and you can see the owners manual in PDF format. Page 5, the picture is a bit confusing, but basically it's saying from your amp run two sets of wires for both left and right channels, one for your sub input and one for your speakers. Good luck, if I were you I'd keep my eye out of a pre with sub output, should give you better control over everything.

Nope... not your problem. I'd assumed your sub had speaker outs.

You can wire your Infinity in parallel with your Mon 10's, but you'll have no real way to blend it with your 10's other than to turn it's x-over wa-a-a-ay low to the point where your 10's naturally roll-off. The only way to get LFE in that case would be if your DVD-player can be set to add it to its L/R output... but that would mean it would go to your 10's as well... so I would not do this.

You might be able find an old AVP (or AVR) on the cheap that can decode Dolby, provide a LFE sub-output and relieve your 10's of some of the deep bass duty as well. But until you find one...

I'd just nab a Pre and go 2.0... AKA stereo...
