Yup the HDR has volume control AND Asynchronous USB. Volume control is mainly what I am after, otherwise the DAC-1 or DAC-1 USB would work.
Eventually I would like my system to be simply Computer-DAC/Pre-Amp-Speakers. But thats years out since I dont forsee having the money or space anytime soon

LOL, I disagree. The iX series (mostly i5 and i7) are better, but not by enough to justify the cost since it would require a new mobo and new memory as well.
