replacing rt2000i tweets with rti series tweets

I'm not really serious about this, but it was just a thought.

I like the rti silk tweets a lot better than the tri-lams in my rt2000is. And for my modest receiver the 2000is give me a lot more bass wallop than any of the rti towers.

I picked up a pair of rti38s cheap at CC last week, and can score a csi30 for $150 at Crutchfield. I also have a pair of rti28s for surround use.

So what I am thinking is switching out the tri lams in the 2000is with the silks in the rti38s. Am I just friggin' stupid?

Just wondering if anyone has tried this.

Signed,

dumbass Woody

I don't think it's possible without switching out the cross over also. The cross over in each speaker is designed specifically for the characteristics of the components (tweeter, drivers, etc.) of that particular speaker. If you just switch out the component, may it be the tweeter or driver, it would not make a difference and sometimes it would sound bad. Worse yet it could damage the tweeter or the driver all together.

Yeah, I suspected I would probably have to swith the crossover too. Don't know if I want to get into that.

Thanks for the reply. I was kind of just looking for someone to talk some sense into me.

The specs should be pretty close. If we were talking about installing an LSi or SDA tweeter, different story.

The swap you are talking about SHOULD just be a drop in mod.

    Cheers,

The silk and tri lam are interchangable. Seriously, however....The silk is kind of lose in the RTxxxi baffle. Just to let you know.

Never tried the mixture, but I did drop one in before I realized the crossover was broken, then I took it out and put the tri lam back in. I personally dont like the silk. That is just my opinion.

    BS,
    Please be quiet.

    Update...
I just switched out the tweets from my rti38s and put them into my rt2000is. Easy as hell. The 2000i tweets don't fit quite as well into the 38s due to a slightly larger magnet. Haven't listened to the 38s yet to see if there is any vibrations audible.

The 2000is (or maybe now I should call them the rti2000s!) sound better to me so far. I'll have to listen for a few days and see if I still like it.

Not that anyone but me cares. I know everybody is out at CC trying to see the new stuff!

Interesting, I think over time your going to hear a very large drop in detail. IMO, my Dad and I both heard it when I stacked my speakers vs how they use to sound. The silk uses much cheaper materials than the tri lam, open them both up and see for yourself.
