For starters, I am brand new to the world of high-end audio. I recently decided to get myself a nice Stereo system so I can I enjoy my music more. I just bought myself a Sony DH100 stereo receiver to get me started and now I am stuck on what speakers to buy. Polk ebay has the Monitor 70's ($335) and the RTI8's ($399) for sale right now and I'm considering buying one or the other. I have the following questions:

1) For music without a sub in a medium sized room, what speakers would you recommend (mostly rock and electro)?
2) Given the price difference between the M70's and RTI8's, what do you feel represents the better value? Is the RTI8 the same as an RTI 5A?
3) What do you think of the DH100 receiver? and is adequate to power these speakers?
4) Would you recommend anything else (for example an amp) that I could buy to make these speakers run their best with my DH100?

Much thanks!
Marc

I had that exact receiver with my M70's not to long ago. I havn't heard the RTI8's. The M70's sounded great in my medium-sized living room, and the receiver didn't seem to have any problems. That said, they sound better now hooked up to a bigger receiver as part of my ht. I think to truly get the potential out of either the M70's or the RTI8's you will need to get a better reciever, but if your budget isn't there right now, I know for sure the M70's will sound good.

I'm sure there are many more opinions out there. Welcome to CP.

For music with no sub, M70s no doubt.

Thanks for the replies! One factor keeping me from buying the m70's are some reports of the tweeters failing early. The RTI's being a step up in component quality (from what I've heard) I figured it might be a better choice in the long run.

Any other thoughts between the two speakers for my applications?

    Cheers

M70s are more musical (more laid back, wider frequency range with better low end) and rti is sharper, more detailed since it's really a Home Theater focused speaker, so for your purposes m70s make more sense. If your receiver has pre-outs definitely recommend an amp. It takes the m70s to the next level.
