New Monitor 70's Need Receiver!

Hello!!!

Recently Newegg put their Monitor 70s on sale for 99.99 each. I was in the market for some 5.1 speakers and was going to buy a htib setup, but luckily my brother pointed these out so I decided to build a system from the ground up. I am going to start with a 2.1 system and gradually build up to 5.1. The 70's will be delivered today.

As a COMPLETE noob, I was looking for some input as to what receiver I should get. These speakers will be used for everything, Music, Movies, Video games, TV. 3 HDMI ins for the Cable PS3, and whatever else we might add as well as IPOD connectivity are musts. The room is a small living room. 15x18 Budget is 350 or less. Thanks everyone!

~Nick

It's a bit underpowered, and when you start adding more speakers, it's gonna be pushed to it's limits. Try to find a good deal on a Pioneer VSX-1021K or maybe an Onkyo TX-NR609. They'll have a little more head room for your future HT. Oh, and welcome to Club Polk

Circuit city has them on sale for 340.00. It blows local retailers out of the water. Does this deal look legit? Doesn't look like its used or refurbed. If you can find one cheaper, let me know!

Yes, this is a very good option for your m60s. As long as you are going to stay with this setup for a while, because this receiver will not handle much bigger speakers than those m60s.

Add a nice 10 inch sub to the mix and you will be rocking the house

New here too and can attest to the Onkyo TX-NR609 being a nice receiver. Doesn't have "Airplay", no connection for an added amp...but has a better interface, better/simpler remote and for the price, happy. (I added an Apple TV so now have Airplay and all the benefits of it for the future.) Guess the Denon and Pioneer equivalents should still be a worthy consideration but....I was ready to "spring", the Onkyo was local, and went for a crazy price @299.00. Not going to look back as this thing runs very strong and can handle my decent speaks and gear extremely well. More money will get you more but what a "sweet spot"! Those M60's....same!!

Found this guy on sale as well. Will this push the 60's just as well? I read it doesn't have the overlay GUI.

I prefer the Pioneer, and it's a little more powerful. If you prefer Onkyo though, you won't be dissapointed with the 609. It's a fine receiver.

As this is my first system, I have no experience with either. Which one would be easier for a noob to configure?

I think they're both on the "user" friendly side so that's not a consideration. If you can afford the Pioneer, I'd say step up to that or try an Onkyo TX-SR 709 for the pre-outs the 609 does not have?

Either way, they're both good brands. I'd try to get my ears on both because the sound is a bit different. See which you prefer!

I went with the Pioneer. Comes next week. What will I need in the way of speaker wire?

So this is what I got

    http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PUSA/Shop/Specials/Top+Specials/VSX-1021-K+Refurbished

One question I had was regarding clipping. Will I need to do anything special to prevent damage to my 60s? With the amp I linked I don't want to under power these guys. As I stated, the listening room is small, and the couch is roughly 8 feet away from the tv/speakers. Volume would never be outrageous.

The Pioneer was a very good choice. Reviewers (Professional opinions.) gave it the top rating for audio quality in the mid-range bracket. My Onkyo was well appreciated but a touch behind in audio quality. Still....one of the great ones this year and nice.

Keep the volume ABOVE -20 on rcvr, and you should be safe. As far speaker wire goes, any brand BUT Monster is recommended
I refuse to argue with idiots, because people can't tell the DIFFERENCE!

Why above -20? I was going to go with bluejeancables, but it seems they only have 10-12g wire. is this overkill?

I just bought the Onkyo TX-NR 609 @ Best Buy $350, PSW10 $99, and also am waiting for the Polk Monitor 60's from Newegg $99 X 2. I found your post on BI-Wiring and Speaker Wire Selection. In the past I always went with larger wiring but to go too big you have to use bananna plugs on Onkyo and I have read that this can cause the posts to sag giving you problems later. Some people tie wires up to relieve the wieght. Has anyone actually BI-wired these and also tried jumping with wire on Moniter 60's with an Onkyo 609? I'm hoping to receive my polks by Friday so I can try. I also had bought the 608 for $225 at HH Greg floor model and been running it since Sunday but it has incorrect remote and Best buy gave me such a good deal I'll be returning the 608. I'll also compare the 608 and 609, but I belive they should be about the same. I'll let you know how I make out, be sure to update how you do. Regards

Hi there. That 609 is very up to date even with wifi via Onkyo modual however it does not have pre-outs. I purchased a txnr 708 on Onkyo's web site via "Club Onkyo" (free to join) has a little more power and pre-outs, a nice solid package. It is a network receiver but not wifi. When you buy from this site the units are Factory Refurbished and come with a 1 year warranty. My 708 came in @ $319.00 and you have to check every day as they don't last long.
Main Family Room: Sony 46 LCD, Sony Blue Ray, Sony DVD/VCR combo,Onkyo TXNR 708, Parasound 5250,
    Polk SDS-SRS with mods, CSI 5 center + Klipsch SC2, Polk RT2000P rears, Klipsch KG 1.5's sides, Polk Micro Pro 1000, Polk Micro Pro 2000, Polk SW505, Belkin PF60, Signal Cable Classics,Monster IC's, 2 15 amp circuits & 1 20 amp circuit.

    Living Room: Belkin PF60, Parasound HCA2200, MIT ProlineEXP balanced IC's,Emotiva XDA-1 DAC/Pre,Emotiva ERC2 transport,MIT AVT2, Polk LSI 9's.

Just hooked up the 609 and read up on the forums first. have a winner here. Bi-amped my 60's and a friend sold me a hand me down paradigm cc150. Rocks the house. The settings on the 609 are easy and with the correct remote compared to my 608 that I'm returning. I get scared of refurbed sometimes. the 609 does have alt room preouts next to sub outputs. I'm very impressed with the $99 monitor 60's and free shipping from new egg. My grills were not cracked but I did take care to unpack them carefully from bottom up. Newegg sent me a special for energy towers @ $119 which is what I really wanted, but I'm more than happy with the 60's.
