I pulled the polys out of the sda x-overs today. And it is like taking a veil off of them. Yeah, yeah i know ohhh the veil removal comment. But is more than that. Treble seems more crisp and has micro detail that I did not notice before. One thing I picked out is rim shots and hand clapping seem more realistic and have a more realistic attack. Okay, I guess that was two. Guitars have more of a real sound as in when I have sat and listened to friends play, both acoustic and electric. At lower volume levels you can just hear so much more than before, and also sounds a little bright. At higher volumes it mellows some. In another thread someone said pianos sound right, I will say it does sound more natural. I don't know if it will be to bright for me as I have not had enough time to sit and listen. If I find that it is too bright sounding, I will have to save up for some RDOs. I listening right now as I am typing, I have the radio going and just heard a cow bell...Sweat, just right sounding.

I can not wait to have the coin to redo the x-overs..all in good time. I did not have any resistors in had to put in. I did not use a jumper either. I took the resistors that were in line with the poly switches and unsoldered the lead of the resistor from it's hole and put that lead in the hole for the intput side of the polyswitch. In the second pic you can see the hole the resistor was in right by the corner of it. The output side of the polyswitch was parallel with that hole and was connected to the same trace. Just had to push the resistor over some so the lead would go through far enough to bend over and solder it.

Sorry for the bad pics, crappy phone camera.

This is just my first impressions listening to Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros. I got it for Christmas and have been listening to it ever since. I have become pretty familiar with it. I also did some listening to Rushes Permanent waves(MoFi Gold Disc).

RDOs will help, and you also have the option of various resistor values until you get it to sound the way you like.

Is the poly switch the yellow piece in the first pic? Truthfully how complicated/hard is it to remove for someone with zero experience in working on electronics? I believe my right speaker poly is going bad. I would love to rebuild my crossovers and have read some of the threads on this but am a complete newb with this type of project. Would have to buy the tools as well as the parts to do it.

    Eric,

Thanks man! I'm going to see how my ears handle what I have for now, but will get a hold of you if things change.

    Simm,

The brownish-yellow disk is the polyswitch. Here is a quick read for you.How to solder basics

The di*k was supposed to be disk...... I really wouldn't want to deal with a member of that coloring.

I'm sure you already know the paths you must take, but don't forget to consider your inductors eventually. I'm sure my polys were blanketing my speakers after years of heavy use and tripping. ;)
Rdo will make a vast difference but it's great to get such a change from cheap tweaks like removing the poly switch. Trey took mine out when he did my crossovers. Huge difference right away even before burn in time was done and I think that was due to removing the poly. Now my inductors are finally getting some real hours logged and I'm still experiencing increase in audible improvement. Correcting my receiver settings is helping too. Anyway, rdo huge, crossover, huge, inductors, bliss

I've been planning on recapping the crossovers for years now. Inductors will be closer to the end of tweaks. I would also like to get some spikes under them as well. I already need 3 sl2000s as is right now. The one on my right channel has about half of the adhesive that is no longer sticking. The ones on the 7s did not make it through the karma that my exland lord received. Things to do, things to do they never seem to get done. Having 4 little ones and another on the way kind of takes away from play time.

I've got two sl2000's if you want them. I was going to karma them anyway. I assumed you had spiked already. Pm me and I'll send em out which should help you get spikes and then trade up for rdo's. I was waiting for a deserving polkie in need.

Sounds like that worked for you, but I must say that the last thing I've ever heard about SL-2000s Poly or not, is that they were veiled? That's not been my experience...those babies are "hot" and in your face. And if ripping out the polys makes them even more of "that"....wow!

    Have fun with the rest.

    evhudsons,
Thanks again. We are now enjoying the 7s again, they are pulling rear duty, and are a much better match than the realistics that did not make it. I missed having full range surrounds.

    Eric,
I received the resistors today and installed them about an hour ago. That is exactly what they needed. I was thinking as the polys were closer to .2 ohms that the .5 would mellow it to much...wrong, just what the Dr. ordered. Thank you.

After listening with the polys out for a while I came to the conclusion that they sounded too bright almost fatiguing after long listening sessions. Another thing I noticed is that the sound stage seemed to break up some. Placement of instruments seemed to jump around from when going up and down the scale . Voices that were centered, went from being a point in space to being about 2-3 ft wide. Also everything seemed to come from the same plane as the speakers, little to no depth. There is also a slight jump in out put right around the x-over point, just kinda make stuff in that range seem not quite right.

Now with the mills in place, I think this is the best I have ever heard these things sound. Every thing just gels so well together. Center images are locked down. Over all imaging is back to were it should be. I also got the depth back. Guitars sound much better. There is no more of the instruments moving from side to side as they climb or descend the scale.

I so can not wait to recap the x-overs, I'm thinking this will be the year for that when income tax comes in. I'd also like to get a new amp, it's time for more power!!! But it's a toss up, new amp or new motor, speed control, batteries, charger, wheels and tires for my other hobby. I think I might wait on the amp as the kids enjoy the RCs more than the system, well at least the boys do. Both the girls love music. The older one likes it loud! Is that bad for a 3 almost 4 year old to like it loud? The 1 1/2 yr old seems to really like big band music. What ever is playing they will both start dancing. The older one is starting to throw new "moves" in. The younger is just so cute to watch. She has an awesome sense of rhythm and is always adding something new. I was watching King Kong the other day(the newer one) and she just went off dancing to the opening music...way too cute, I love my kids.

Thanks again guys for making this polkie a happy camper.

My life goal is to be happy, and take as many people down the same path. You are more than welcome. When you finally get the rdo194's you can keep the karma going.

Today was one heck of an awesome day in Key West which from my experience means many of yall had a great day too.

    Today's the day my friends!
