The Beastie Boys, pretty much anything with some exceptions on The In Sound From Way Out and Paul's Boutique. Otherwise they're pretty compressed.

Punk music as a genre seems to be done poorly.

Hank Williams stands out. They're old recordings, granted, but they still sound like crap. And punk does suck for SQ, Rancid in particular although that may just be his voice.

Any Rush album, as already pointed out. I like the music on a few albums from The Cult, but unfortunately it's torture to listen to them. I would also love to hear U2 Joshua Tree and The Unforgettable Fire as they should sound.

Honestly, I guess I shouldn't have posted because there are no poor recordings that I "love". There is only music that I wish I could love in those poor recordings.

I know punk music doesn't care about corporate stuff but it would be nice to get a decent rancid album or early greenday. Anthrax is another band that could use some better recordings.

Do you have Bat out of Hell on Vinyl? It sounds much better that way.

I read this thread at work yesterday and once I got home I decided to listen to RUSH's Permanent Waves CD, oh man was it bad! Now here's the thing this CD used to sound decent on my old Cerwin Vega D-3's driven by a cheap Kenwood receiver (this system is in the garage now, maybe I should use it when listening to this CD).

I've acquired everything in my signature below within the last couple of years, and I remember reading about how good equipment would make a poorly recorded CD sound really bad, but I wasn't expecting what I heard. On the other hand listening to a well recorded CD just blows me away, it is a night and day difference, the music is just so much more enjoyable.

There in lies the rub. I actually use my HT setup for some of my older albums because it plays hotter than my 2ch setup. Plus my 2ch has zero eq ability.

Try the MFSL version of Permanent Waves. It's not the best MFSL sounding CD, but it's definately better than any other version of the CD.

"I'm yet to hear a Polk speaker that merits more than a sentence and 60 seconds discussion." :\
My response is: If you need 60 seconds to respond in one sentence, you probably should't be evaluating Polk speakers.....

Headrott, thanks for the info on Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs, I was not aware of this outfit, I'm still a rooky at this audiophile stuff. I checked out their website, kinda pricey at $30 but I'm going to take the plunge. My fear going forward - am I going to be paying $30 or more for my CD's?

Eye in the sky Alan parsons. The LP and cd both are tinny without hardly any bass.

I was listening to "A Show of Hands" today (original version) and I have to say that, even for a live album, it is one of the best SQ Rush recordings. To be fair, I haven't really listened to "Snakes and Arrows" or "Rush in Rio". A Show of Hands actually has some spatial dimension and covers the audio spectrum well. Geddy's voice tends to sound a little boxed in but that is the way it was live.
