Tyler Acoustics Linbrook Super Towers - Heavily Modified

I write this with some sadness as this is by far the best speakers I have heard and owned - particularly for the money. I have put blood, sweat, tears, time, effort and much research into these speakers trying to extract as much from these speakers as possible....

Tyler Acoustics became known on the market many years ago as a hand built, cost effective high end audio solution that used top tier drivers. Each midbass driver is the Seas Excel series, known to be found in speakers costing tens of thousands of dollars. The Seas Millenium soft dome tweeter at the helm leading the way.

My particularly model is one of the first to sport the new "angled" cabinets and unlike his "new" version of the Super Tower still uses the 7" midbass instead of the 6". These particularly speakers have sold more Tyler Acoustic speakers than any I am aware of - I have had many folks over here that later on end up obtaining Tyler Acoustics. I have heard many brands, many models, all price points and I have yet to find anything to compare in anywhere the price point.

These speakers are accurate, they tell it like it is but what is unique about them is their uncanny ability to play multiple types of music extremely well and are able to extract every last detail of a great recording. Capable of pin point imaging with a heavy spatial feel.

Here is what these speakers spec out at -

1) Base, Tyler Acoustics Super Towers -
http://tyleracoustics.com/linbrook.html
Original MSRP is $5,800 + $50.00 for grills. This is before the new enclosures came out which are far more involved. Ty does not have a new page for this new "updated" line. The optional Rosewood finish is an extra $600.00, also feature magnetic grills - full length that cover the ports as well...

2) Internal wiring has been updated with DH Labs T-14 versus the stock 18 guage wire, the wire was left in its insulated jacket so it is "twisted" and laid out for the shortest, most efficient runs possible.

3) Cabinet has been lined with No Rez throughout but strategically placed to allow the drivers to breathe appropriately.

4) Diffraction be gone surrounds the tweeters for a tighter focused soundstage and cleaner highs.

5) Hot Rodded crossovers -
a. Clarity Cap MR on the tweeter network
b. Duelund Graphite resistor on the tweeter network
c. Clarity Cap SA series on the midbass network
d. Mills MRC50 on the midbass network
e. Tweeter network features a Jantzen inductor vs. Madisound (stock)
f. Woofer network features all film and foil inductors.
g. Externally mounted for maximum vibration isolation, easy maintenance and modding.
h. Heavy duty binding post on the speakers and crossover network for maximum transfer.
i. Enclosure is non-magnetic and hand built with hand rubbed dark Walnut side panels
j. Features Tyler Acoustics logos on the front of the network boxes and the back has a custom engraved plate
k. Comes with an 8 ft "umbilical" cable (DH Lab Q-10)

6) Speakers feature brass spikes

7) I would also be willing to upgrade the crossovers further for the price of parts if you would like to throw ESA or MR on the midbass network.

Condition - These are an easy 8 - I would even go as far as to say they are a 9! However to be safe I will call them an 8 on the audiogon scale. I have the original boxes and am willing to ship.

Reason for selling - I honestly just do not use my system enough to justify having these and like my amplifiers I have obligations to square away and will essentially downsize from here...

Price: If you were to buy these from Ty modded to this extent you would easilly be in the $8,000 range - no questions. I am looking for $3,700 + shipping and I would challenge that you would be hard pressed to find a better speaker for that money. At least in my experience.

I will have a chance to post updated pictures on Tuesday but will attach some for now :). Please note the picture of the crossover innards was when I first moved them over to the new enclosures - I do not have new images of the current layout but will post some Tuesday.

Please read the "review" I have pasted at the bottom of this post wrote by our very own Treitz3 (Tom) -

"I'd like to take this opportunity to say that throughout my audio journey, I have recently discovered that upgrading the crossovers in your speakers should be first and foremost on the list of upgrades to your rig. While this is just my opinion, it comes with merit. Allow me to explain.

Most of you know that I have gone through a plethora of gear recently in my audio journey. Some changes were good, some bad and yet some were really nice upgrades. While I do know that everything affects everything, looking back at what I know now? I would have changed one aspect of my upgrade path.

That would be the the upgrading of the crossover networks in the speakers I have owned.

I know it has been said that "there used to be a day when an SDA speaker sounded good without a crossover upgrade" and that in some folks' rigs, other things must be addressed first....like running with a 8Ω AVR, feeding a set of 4Ω speakers. Provided you have covered the basic fundamentals of building a rig, it is of my opinion that you should do the crossover upgrades next. Don't hold off on it, do it ASAP.

Here's the deal. I have a set of Tyler Acoustic's Linbrook Signature series loud speakers. Trey [Sid the kid] has a set of Super Towers, also from Tyler Acoustics. His are a smaller, taller version of mine and would be "considered", if you will, a slight downgrade from my speakers within the lineup of Tyler speakers. I have heard his speakers on my amp, his amp, similar sources, MIT cables, no MIT cables, with and without a sub and basically are rigs are relatively similar. They both sounded great and we were both pleased.

Given the smaller radiating surface of his speakers, you would expect a slight reduction of bass output which is exactly what what the end result is. Otherwise, besides room acoustics and surroundings, our rigs sounded very similar no matter the gear swap. Just different flavors of sound. Like when we swapped his SS amps with my tube amp. Just a different flavor 'tis all.

That said, Trey went and upgraded his crossover networks and actually removed them from the speaker altogether while at the same time, mine remained stock. Upon hearing just one speaker running full go when I visited a while ago [one speaker had only a tweeter issue that has since been resolved, so the speaker was running....just not the tweeter on that one speaker], I immediately noticed that the sound had improved on the speaker that was running full tilt. He had done nothing else to his rig but upgrading the crossover network.

A couple of weeks go by and I have a chance to come get my ears on the rig that has the new tweeter installed, so both speakers are running at full capacity. Again, immediately upon entering the audio room, I noticed a great deal of improvement in the sound. Well, I had brought a couple of demo tracks to check out on his rig, so we gave it a whirl. Man, what a difference! I enjoyed the entire listening session and went on my merry way.

Got home and turned on my rig and immediately shut it off for three weeks. It sounded like I had a K-mart rig or some ****.

Three weeks go by and I could finally tolerate my rig again but I really only truly enjoyed it when I was watching a movie. 2 channel stuff just wasn't up to par now. For the first time, it was like a blanket was being thrown over my rig and the enjoyment level just wasn't there as it had been for right about one year now.....and this was with the addition to the Tyler Acoustic subs he had recently slid my way to add to my rig.

So, I go over to his pad this past weekend and give a listen to his rig again. He has had some time to burn everything in and I wanted to hear what it sounded like. HOLY MOLY!!!!

Everything about the sound had changed. Everything. Words can not give you what I experienced. As he says, "there is more weight to the instruments, singers". Um.....yeah! The reproductive quality of his speakers have now taken a listening experience to levels further than what a new amplifier would do, further than improving the source, further than adding a dedicated 20 amp circuit would do.

The difference is so staggering, I do not even want to listen to my rig anymore until I upgrade the crossovers. Funny, seeing that before he did this? We had about the same rig, just slightly different sounds.

So, in conclusion of this rather long post, I wish I had done things differently and started with the crossover network upgrades first. THEN moved on with the upgrade path with the rest of the rig. The difference is simply amazing.

Ricardo, you have owned the same speakers I own now with some pretty stellar gear running it in a dedicated audio room. Can you imagine that system sounding like crap? That's what it's like when comparing the stock X-overs to the upgraded ones. All at a cost of around 9 bills. Had you upgraded the crossovers, I believe your audio journey would have taken a different path.

Some of you might have wondered why I have recently been telling Trey that I hate him. This is why.

Crossover upgrades coming soon to a rig in my living room. I may hate the little **** but I thank him profusely for showing me the way to elevate my audio journey to areas well beyond what I had ever envisioned. Way to go, kid. Way to go." - Tom

The gentleman that purchased my Heavily Modified Taylo Reference II had this to say about them -

"Let me start by saying that everything is fine and the speakers sound amazing. For the first time in the last couple of years, I feel everything is coming together in my system. They are driven just fine by my 30 Watt VAC amp and I can hear great nuance, detail and tone. I can easily hear the differences between recordings and sources, but even poor recordings sound their best. Playing my best recordings and pressings on vinyl is positively breathtaking." - Drew

He also owned a set of non-modified Taylo Reference II before obtaining these so he had a great base of their sound traits.

Too blood for my rich :(

For the looky-lou's, I purchased some crossovers from VR3 and it was hiccup-less. I wouldn't hesitate to buy a pair of speakers at this price point from him if I had this kind of coin.

    GLWTS buddy!

I did not notice a sonic improvement but there are felt pads under it... they weigh like 90 pounds so it allows me to slide they around... :)

    Stupid price lower

$3500 - shipped, fees, etc + 2m DH Labs Air Matrix and 1M DH Labs Air Matrix.

Incredible bargain, you would have to be silly to pass this up if you are in the market for higher end speakers.

    I know I know.

I am about to drop the same amount of money on my yard so I would like to see these find a home.

I just picked up a set of M Audio BX5 D2 monitors from work for my computer and while they are not that awesome I use them far more because of convenience... sad man, very sad. I just dont use my speakers enough to justify owning them.

Tom has the matching subs, which I believe he was wanting to sell them as well to do the crossover mods I did to his speakers...

So I guess you could definitely get the set back if needed to - Since Tom is local I could definitely help arrange it.

Gents, these are some top notch speakers and will make you the envy of the hood. Some of you may not be familiar with the brand but rest assured they make top notch speakers. Add what Trey did to the crossovers, nothing Polk makes can touch these, and I don't mean that as a slam to Polk. They are just better speakers, period. Trey is primo, he's giving a warranty, unheard of on the used market, and tossing in some goodies. This is a bargain guys, a damn good one to boot.

Glwts Trey, hope they find a home within the family.

I am willing to accept trades for gear in 8/10 or better - will give fair market value but it must be desireable gear - no weird crap.

The trade value would be the going rate minus shipping. Obviously the best way to arrange said trade would be meeting.

I will take receivers, amps, speakers, subs, you name it - preferably lower value gear.

May be a chance for you to get something awesome :)
