I have been wanting to move to TN in the worst way for a few years now. I am somewhat familiar with the eastern side, mostly outside of Chatty near Ootlewah and Harrison area. It is the most beautiful place to me. The people are nice, traffic is reasonable and the weather is great. Love the Chickamauga waters too! I am looking for any decent job there. I even drove down for an interview at Amazon in August, but was offered a "part time" job. That was not going to happen. I am a pretty good carpenter, remodeler, painter, etc. Of course I have been looking for a fixer-upper home. It would be just me and my labrador .......of course my stereo! Any eastern TN people here?

Live in Texas now but was raised in TN. Lived in Chattanooga for a while and did not like it, Nashville or even Huntsville AL are better choices, IMO.

Chattanooga always felt like an old money town that never changed.

Might check out Tullahoma, smaller but nice city.

I wouldn't live in any city myself. I like atleast 20 miles from any city. Not a "neighborhood" lover either. I like quiet areas where the houses aren't 10' apart.

    Hello musky-
Welcome to Club Polk! I live in Johnson City about 1 1/2 east of Knoxville. There is a couple of Tennessee members in the Knoxville area. Hope you are able to find suitable employeement and make the move. Taxes are decent and the weather has enough change to not be boring but is rarely extreme.

Good luck on the move, you'll be much happier over here. The Bristol - Johnson City - Kingsport area is fantastic.
Having said that, I'm in the western NC area - my wife finds the weather to be a bit more agreeable and something about fewer cousins to "run the roads with" - who knows?

Speaking of Popcorn Sutton... A good friend of my is a professional photographer and was commissioned to do a photoshoot of Popcorn for a magazine that was doing an article on him. It was near the time he was going to have to report to prison. This photograph was taken mere hours before he committed suicide. There is a whole series of photos...but this one speaks volumes.

Im one right here. I am born and raised in Chattanooga. Id live nowhere else. I lived in Texas for a few years (Austin and then Temple) and while it was great and I consider Temple, TX to be my adopted home town, I love Chattanooga more.

The things I like about it is its big enough to have all the stuff youd want out of a city, but small enough to not have all the crap. Traffic isnt that bad even during rush hour, the cost of living is very low as are the taxes. There is a nice mix of people from yuppies to hippies to gangsters and we all get along pretty well. We dont have that much crime, or at least nothing outrageous like in Atlanta and what not. We do have a fledgling gang problem but it doesnt seem to be super major.

I live across the Georgia line in Ringgold which is my home town. Its considered a suburb of Chattanooga since its only 5 miles away. If youre wanting to buy a house, Ringgold or north Georgia in general I highly recommend. GA does have a state income tax that TN does not so it is a little more expensive but houses are cheaper in GA right on the TN line so youre saving a couple hundred in house payment. I paid $158,000 for our house and it would easily be $190,000 if it were 5 miles north. Plus, the income tax keeps the sprawl out. The Chattanooga business stop at the state line because they know they can stay in TN, save the income tax and get the same customers. This is nice because it keeps north Georgia nice and quiet for living but within 5-15 minutes you can be anywhere in Chattanooga that you want.

What line of work are you looking for? Lemme know and maybe I can direct you to something.

You are a helluva lot safer in the backwoods of the Appalachians than much of the city of Memphis. I've spent considerable time in both and there is no way I would ever live in Memphis.

Come on down....!!! Nice area to live and costs are better than many areas!

Lots of storm damage last spring and that'd have been a good time to be around with those skills. There was a string of house damage from the Chatt area on up through the Tri-Cities area. Actually, a lot of the roof work has been done, but some other still remains to be done. Like on my house...I have windows to still be replace, porch rails to be replaced etc. All year out of state plates on work trucks have been very, very common!

Anywhere though this area, with the terrain, you can be somewhat close to town but not be on top of people either. You can turn a corner and it's a different view and area. There are out of the way places and still be within 15-20 minutes of a mall area easy.

Good luck with where ever you head! And there are some pretty active audio people around here!
