Congrats! I work in COPD research, and that's the number 1 thing you do to improve your lung function.

Also, lowers your risk of bladder cancer, heart disease + probably a few other diseases I can't think of right now.

Now, I just wish my mother would quit, so she doesn't die of lung cancer like my father did. Or, end up with emphysema like one of her sisters has from smoking.

Good job,you have gotten over the hump. I "was" a heavy smoker for over forty years. Nothing like getting up in the morning, and being able to take a deep breath and not cough up a lung.

Quitting appears to be very difficult for some, requiring multiple attempts. I believe studies show that the average smoker who succeeds has attempted quitting 7 times. The strange thing is others do it cold turkey and have no relapses. Must have something to do with a person's metabolism and how they react to nicotine, the addicting component in tobacco.

Definitely encourage her, and get her doctor involved. There are different things she can try to help her: nicoderm patches, chantix, an anti depressant called Welbutrin has helped some succeed.

Well it's not like I am a fat **** really. I am 6'4" 230lbs now. Feeling, breathing and sleeping better is a decent trade off for a few extra pounds.

Cold turkey has proven to be the most successful method. There's no money in it, so doctors usually recommend patches or pills, and of course the pharmaceutical companies spend millions advertising them. All the patches and gum do is prolong your addiction. You are still addicted to the nicotine as long as you take them.

I quit just a little over 21 months ago. My doctor prescribed Zyban, but after three weeks of insomnia, I quit taking them, and just quit cold turkey. Walking 2-3 miles a day will keep the weight off, and gives me something else to do on breaks at work, when everyone else is smoking.

Good luck to anyone who tries.
