Pulled this out tonight to watch since it's been awhile. Only thing different this time is I watched the second disk which gives a more detailed look into Hearst and Orson Wells. Very interesting stuff. The wife and I looked at each other while watching certain parts because the similarities to todays press is staggering. If any of you haven't spun that second disk, do so. In reality, Rosebud was what ? C'mon, tax that brain gents.

    It was his sleigh.

And yes, it's amazing how his form of journalism has lasted 100+ years.

A "Spoiler Alert" would have been nice. What's next? You're going to tell me that Luke was in some way related to Vader?

    I'm guessing he meant "sled".

Guys, I know you think it's the sled because they showed the sled with Rosebud on it getting tossed into the fire, but in reality, Rosebud was his pet name for......?

Answer.....according the the documentary on the second disk anyway, it was his pet name for his girlfriends private parts.

I never saw movies as art until I had to watch this movie for a college class. From then on I became a movie fan. Until then I thought I had "outgrown" movies because I only saw the ones in movie theaters growing up then felt that they were just made for the masses and not for the person I had become.

Until Citizen Kane that is. I think it ranks as the best or top 5 for sure movies of all time. After that movie I started my incremental path of home theater.

Correct....but on the documentary, they tell you differently. That second disk was more interesting than the movie. Lots of background was given for both Hearst and Wells.

I must've seen Citizen Kane a good dozen times and I have no idea how this inference was made. Also, the only "girlfriend" I saw was Susan whom he later married. In the movie Kane uttered "Rosebud" only minutes after Susan left him when he died. Somehow I find it difficult to assimilate this "real" meaning of Rosebud with these facts as presented in the film.

I interpreted the sled/sleigh not only as a symbol of Kane's innocence and youth, but also was the device he used to attack Mr Thatcher who basically set the foundations for what ultimately culminated in Charlie's undoing.

Citizen Kane and 2001 are the only movies where I have fallen asleep while watching. However, now that I know what is a Rosebud, I should rewatch it sometime after a nap.

In addition to being a classic this film is shown in many Film History courses as being one of the very first uses of the "Long take Deep focus" technique (see the dining scene!).

Don't have this on disk so I have no idea what's on the Second disk!

In Kane it was the sled... it was Orson's way of irritating Hurst...

I know that big guy, just fascinates me the back and forth between Hearst/Wells. Wells put forth that rumor about Rosebud actualy being the private parts of Hearsts girlfriend to piss him off. But yes, in the movie it was the sled. It also is very interesting the control Hearst had over the media and the extent he went to to make up stories and destroy those he didn't like. Sound familiar ? On the second disk, you even see Ronald Reagan getting off a train in Dixon, illinois with no mention of him. Also the extent Hearst went to not have Citizen Kane shown was astounding, even successful to a good degree too. Good history on that 2nd disk....and good commentary by those around Hearst/ Wells, Douglas Fairbanks jr. being one of them.

Wasn't Fairbanks, Jr. with Hearst on Hearst's boat when some young starlett was killed??? I saw a movie years ago about this.

    Edward Herman played Hearst IIRC...

And seems like Robert Downey, Jr. was in it too... which makes me think it may have been Chaplin not Dougie, Jr.

    ======================================================

    EDIT: Found it... http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0266391/

It was Herman and Chaplin, but not Downey, Jr... Eddie Izzard played Chaplin???
